Petzl carbide lamp refurbishment

Hi all
I have been given a old Petzl helmet and carbide lamp set up and a load of carbide rocks.
I would like if possible to refurbish the lamp to a usable standard.
Is anyone able to give advice on where to start with this shed tinkering project.
I don't intend on using the lamp/ helmet underground, more as a home show piece.

Thanks

I'd start by removing the jet, check the rubber seal is ok or replace. Scrub the head piece with an old toothbrush and soapy water.
Once the reflector is clean, polish with a metal polish.
Rinse out the tube, make sure there are no holes.
Again, soap and water with the generator.
The construction is fairly straight forward, every bit you take off photograph it, then you know what the reverse order is.

The hose is standard fabric reinforced plastic. Tends to go hard and lose flexibility over time, leading to gas leaks at the joints each end. Readily available and cheap, so replace it.

In this day and age carbide is a rarity in UK caving. Be aware the ash is quick lime/ slaked lime, that is to say highly alkaline. Avoid getting it in your eyes, and rinse skin thoroughly. A soapy feeling on your skin is the early signs of burns. If the lamp hasn't been cleaned out before storage then a good poking with a screwdriver would help. Vinegar will also help remove stubborn residue but water should suffice. The jubilee clips on the gas pipe are non standard but a good idea to prevent the pipe disconnecting. All O rings and seals need to be good to prevent leaks, which may catch fire! Good to use for a BBQ light but will soot up the house if used indoors 👍
