Petzl Duo playing up

Cryptic

Hi,
I have an early Petzl Duo (S perhaps) that's playing up... It'll run for hours on lowest flood setting, but, if you ramp it up a notch, sometimes it'll run on that for maybe a minute and then dim back down, or, it'll flash 3 times and again run for a minute or so and dim back down.

Any idea what the significance of the 3 flashes is? Is the battery borked?

Cheers

I know nothing about the Duo S - but it sounds like the battery cannot maintain the correct current at higher settings (so the voltage drops) and the light is warning the user, then dropping down to a lower setting.

Assuming the battery is charged, it would imply that the battery is getting towards the end of its life.

There was something on this in a relatively recent thread, where a connection is somewhat corroded or otherwise slightly dodgy, increasing resistance, and causing the battery to notch down one or more levels, or to energy saving mode. My Custom Duo does it sometimes.

Ah, cool. I'll strip it down and inspect before springing for replacement battery

Bum. Okay, the obligatory "what was that that just pinged out of it?" - 2 ball bearings - I guess they're the tilt ratchet mech - can't see how \ where they go back in (at least not yet)
Switch mech looks a sealed doohicky on the circuit board - looks clean...

What a clever little design for those BBs - back in place :)

Does anyone have a known working Petzl, R2, Rechargeable Battery and is near to OL5 - that I might be able to pop round and test lamp with - rather than just punting the 80 bucks for a replacement off Amazon?

£80! I'd just cut your losses and get a Fenix 🙃
Anyway, once sorted I do hope an application form to join the UK's premier caving club will be landing in my mail box 😂 😂 😂 .
