Peveril Underground Survey Association

Does anyone know what year the Peveril Underground Survey Association (PUSA) was founded? It was established, I believe, by Bernard 'Monty' Grainger with the express purpose of surveying the Gaping Gill system

Who's who in art (1970) lists:
GRAINGER, Bernard Montague, A.R.C.A., F.R.S.A.; artist and design consultant; served Royal Engineers, Corps Field Survey; b Paddock Wood, Kent, 16 July, 1907; s of WiUiam Montague Grainger; m Pattie Revell; two s, one d. Educ: Ardingly College; studied art at Maidstone School of Art, R.C.A., Central School of Arts and Crafts. Address: Moorbrooke,
Bradwell, Derbyshire, via Sheffield. Clubs: Life Mem., Sheffield University Mountaineering Club, Craven Pothole Club, Cave Research Group, Peveril Underground Survey Association, Past-President of Derbyshire Pennine Club and Sheffield Society of Artists. Signs work: "B. M. Grainger."

Does it say anything in Descent?:
MONTAGUE-GRAINGER, Bernard 'Monty'Fatality & obituary(148), June 1999, p6

He gets several mentions in Craven, Bradford and various other publications, plus
GRAINGER B.M. 1938. “Survey & Report on the Geological Structure of Hensler's Passage, Gaping Gill”. Caves & Caving 1 No 3, pp 110-112.

Although the name suggests more likely he was planning to survey peak cavern, and Jenny Potts did an article 5 years ago comparing his 1938 survey of giants hole to today...

If there's an obituary in a CPC Record (likely) it may mention founding the PUSA in there. You've probably got these at home, so worth checking the ones from 1999.

The Descent obituary Mike flagged up above is very short. Of the PUSA it merely says:

"He subsequently founded the Peveril Underground Survey Association, formed specifically to survey Gaping Gill and during the 1960s members of the Group worked on a new version which was published by the Craven P C."

The PUSA survey I'm looking at here is dated "1966 Revision". It acknowledges the help of various clubs and individuals. One of these is John Whalley, who may be able to answer your question? Alan & Dave Brook are also credited, so they might know. Is it worth checking 1960s CPC Journal GG meet reports for the first mention of PUSA?

If the final survey was produced in 1966 it seems likely the group would have been formed at least 2 or 3 years beforehand. So if you can't nail the actual year then "early 1960s" would seem a reasonable compromise.

There's a rather lengthy biography of "Monty" in the Craven "Rogues Gallery".
(PM me with your email address if you'd like a copy)

There is a review by A.L.Butcher of the 1963 revised plan in CRG Newsletter 92. It says that PUSA had "been engaged for some time on resurveying sections of the Gaping Gill system...".
He also wrote that the Secretary of PUSA was R.Taylor of Sprinkfield Road, Huddersfield - so it wasn't just Monty...

That would be the late Roy Taylor (CPC) which is potentially quite useful to know. Grand bloke; had an amazing Ducati motorbike which I believe is still in the family. I wonder if any paperwork from the PUSA days has survived? (GG-GUY will know who to ask.) The BSA was publishing excellent material at the time; there may be something in there about the launch of the PUSA.

There may also be something in the CPC library, as this was one of the clubs involved and credited on the survey.

Surveys of peak cavern were produced in 1934 and 1936 by M. Grainger.

Seems that he joined the CPC in 1960 to do the resurvey, and gets 3 mentions between then and 1965 in their post war history:

Of course Google AI is really helpful (not):
"Monty Grainger was a surveyor for the Craven Pothole Club who died in 1937 and again in the mid-1960s.
Explanation
Grainger was part of a party that resurveyed the Gaping Gill System in 1999. The party used Tilley Lamp Floodlights to illuminate the cave and film it in color."
I mean, the dates are correct, but not for what happened!

M. Grainger's name on both surveys is followed by ARCA (Associate of the Royal College of Arts), as is Monty's entry in who's who in art (above) - British caving library has pictures of them online

This is probably worth a look:
Grainger, B M 1966. A Review of the P.U.S.A Gaping Ghyll Survey.
Journal of the Craven Pothole Club, VoI.3(6), 299-301 , survey.

Craven record index includes his first write up about GG in volume 2: p.324-326
Subsequent trips for it in 3: p.208 and 221-222 (plus other in last post)
The peak dream in 5: p.26-27 &
Letter to editor 8: p.15-16

(Turns out that : followed immediately by p comes out as 😛)

Monty Grainger late of Terrace Road , Tideswell, was indeed a member of the BSA, TPU, that became the TSG in Castleton.
He was involved with the surveying of the further teaches of Peak Cavern after the Mucky Ducks were passed in 1949.
