Pool Sink rigging info

Hi all,

I was hard-rigging Pool Sink this last weekend for the first time (only ever done it as a pull-through), and really struggled to find any rigging options on the traverse across the two holes before the top of Pitch #2; the CNCC rigging guide seems to show bolts all the way along the top of the two holes before you reach the pull-through bolts, but I could only find them above the first of the two holes (which is the one that really needs protecting anyway) - and after the first hole, there was nothing really in the dry oxbox to tie the traverse line off on (I ended up tieing off on a natural quite far away from the traverse).

Am I just being blind? Any advice appreciated!

I don't remember a problem here. Sounds like you found bolts where you consider protection is needed, and a natural on the dry oxbow beyond. Is your query that there is a long gap between bolts in the easy walking passage?

How did you previously protect this on a pull through? Why is this different?

If you can improve on the existing CNCC topo, please add a sketch here. Even better, email it to the CNCC Anchor Coordinator email address

Cheers,
Ian

I agree with @IanWalker, but I only use a rigging guide to give me an indication of what equipment I will probably need, and once underground, I follow my nose. As far as pull-throughs are concerned, I usually traverse above the bolts for the first hole.

I seem to remember having no trouble finding bolts all the way along when hard rigging here (albeit further apart in the easier/less exposed sections). If it's the pitch I'm thinking of there was a fairly long gap but the length given allowed me plenty of rope to trail through this before reaching bolts again at the next exposed section

I have done this several times and would agree that the furthest bolt (as you are heading in) is far too close to the drop. When you unclip you’re still on the slope of the hole. I also tend to use a natural quite a long way (5m+?) along the passageway.

Hi all and thanks for the info - Ian, I think for the pullthrough I just ended up traversing and clipping my cow's tails into the bolts (I wasn't leading and it was years ago) - this time I was rigging for a group of cavers relatively new to SRT and wanted to give them confidence over the 1st traverse. I wanted to ask because it is very possible I've missed a really obvious set of bolts somewhere!

What @cavetroll says chimes with how I ended up rigging it! Thanks again!
