Redhouse - The Chocolate River

Amazing explanation. What all diggers dream of finding. That draught must be coming from somewhere open to surface. Hope you find out where!

I'm watching these videos, fascinated from the Greek island of Naxos! I'm left thinking what it would have been like to have had this sort of recording technology when many of the great Dales caves were being first explored? With regards to finding another entrance there will also be the conundrum of potentially easier access to consider. I can't say that the preservation of somewhere like Pippikin Pot was enhanced when Link Pot was opened or Mistral widened.

Took a screenshot of the full survey for my screen saver. I remember looking at Flow Choke Passage in Slaughter. How close it is to the new finds. If only --

Flow Choke is one of a number of places likely to connect Redhouse to Slaughter. It's pretty close and I think it's only a matter of time before the caves are linked, but whether this happens before or after a link to one of he Symonds Yat caves remains to be seen.

Fingers crossed for today's exploration/ surveying trip, which I have missed for my daughters 8th birthday party in Eglwys Faen.

As someone who knows very little about Forest of Dean caves can someone tell me how close Redhouse is to Slaughter or a link to an entrance by Symonds Yat? What length would a combined system be?

The combined system will certainly exceed 25km, but I think it has potential for much more than that.

There were some good overlays in the presentation at Hidden Earth showing the relationship of the caves and I know there are a few drafts floating around but not sure what is available online at present, or what is ready to publish yet. I'm sure there will be more surveys in the next issue of Descent too.

The below is centred on Redhouse entrance. Wet Sink is one of the red blobs to the south east and you can see lots of possible options for an exit towards the north west, which is where the Chocolate River is heading.

All surveys are preliminary at present as at some point we want to resurvey the entrance series (which will be fun...). An updated survey including the Marble River was submitted for Descent 302, but I guess they didn't have room.

We will send survey in for Descent 304, which will include all of the latest and hopefully more extensions.

I believe Mark Tringham has submitted an article for Descent 303 on the Slaughter survey work.
