Replacing Zips

Does anybody have experience of replacing zips on oversuits? Is such a task practical (particularly for somebody who finds sewing on a mere shirt button a Sisyphean task)?

The zip on my Daleswear suit has well & truly knacked and I'm loath to shell out best part of a hundred pounds on a new oversuit when the suit itself is still in a decent enough condition bar the odd nick here and there.

I had thought about taking it to a clothing alteration shop in town but I suspect that even a dozen boil washes won't hide the fact its engrained with a couple years worth of the north's finest filth and they might be somewhat reluctant to put it anywhere near a machine they would presumably use for wedding dresses and net curtains!

Thanks!

If you aren't close to a manufacturer, all of whom would replace a zip for you, give it a jolly good wash and go and see the nice tailoring repair lady at your friendly local dry cleaners.

I have done this in the past.

First, find a suitable replacement zip (wetsuit, tent or whatever), then go to your local horsey shop and look at their adverts board, you can usually find someone who repairs horse blankets, they have heavy duty sewing machines to sew canvas and are used to heavily used material!.

You need to go to an outfit called Sail4U if you're in the Dales. They're pretty good at mending things. The bloke that has it is a neighbour of a certain well known Red Rose member, so he has some idea of where you're coming from.

As you drive up the A65 beyond Settle you'll approach that sharp left hand bend where the Feizor turn off is on the left. Just beyond that there's a single story building on the right. Turning into it off the A65 is a bit abrupt so it's best if you're ready for it.

I've had one or two repair jobs done there (as I'm local) and I've found them very helpful. Do get the oversuit as clean as humanly possible though because if there's fine grit cascading off it evert time you move it this gets into the works of the sewing machine and causes wear.

Good luck.

On the right for Feizor, surely...

Dammit - outwitted by a Mendipian. The shame of it!  :-[

Thanks for pointing that out Les - you're right of course.

Cleveland actually but as it happens am in Settle for a long weekend in January which is probably the next chance I'll get to do anything about it anyway so I might well give them ago.

Thanks

Bernies has XXL Meanders on the website.
One of them should fit nicely, they don't have a zip and you might get a Big Discount - because I suspect they may otherwise be around for a very very long time.

. . . in which case I'd get in touch well in advance regarding timings. If he can't turn it round in a weekend it might be worth posting it ahead of the trip so you can pick it up and use it when you're next in the Dales? (Or maybe organise "caver post"?)

The contact details are:

0777 560 4480

He also tends not to start too early in a morning so ask - and factor that in - if relying on collecting the suit.
