Return To Quarter Way Up Hole

Looking for evidence of phreatic water flow in QWUH . I take this to be an anastomosis and scallops . Anastomosis in caves is a primary water conduit sometimes connecting other developing routes. They can be an elementary phreatic spongework often seen as bisected and truncated as wandering channels in roofs or walls. There are fine examples in Reservoir Hole. As to this near vertical example well I may be entirely wrong. The scallops should they be so would indicate slow moving phreatic water.

There's some lovely peripheral anastomosis in Goatchurch Cavern if you know where to look.

BJ asked how far our dig was from Withyhill. Well laterally we are 70m from Broken Curtain Chamber. We are heading for point X. If we keep going south well away from Withyhill. The red lines are the faults and bedding planes aligned with known passages. They pretty much control all the cave structure at FCQ. And dont forget QWUH/HWUH is at the same altitude as Fairy Cave so its phreatic origin pre dates Shatter and Withyhill though at some point it was captured along strike to West Chamber in Withyhill. Number 22 is Prices Pugatory an awkward descending cave quickly destroyed . ( Pete Rose and I did not fancy it so we rammed Graham Price down there c 1973 ). It could have been another capture point along the Withyhill stream conduit.The passages at QWUH/HWUH ( 23 24 ) have been omitted for clarity . As you see there are three faults in that area. Rolling Thunder at QWUH

Almost a party atmosphere with Martin Grass, Snablet from NZ, Nigel, Brian and me.
Well true to say that more boulders were " moved " today than at any other time.

Nigel and Brian capped and dug at Brian's Delight ( looking for a better name ). Snablet hauled. I poked PP making a mini rumble. Martin hauled and Snablet helped clear up my mess.

Lunch. ( With stories of cavers young and old )

Nigel drilled the tiny keystone holding everything up in PP. ***** blew it in half but the pressure on it was too much to remove.
Nigel poked the huge block in the roof. It dropped a tiny bit at a time. Then followed a thunderous roar when the whole lot came down. Nigel got knocked backwards. A heck of a lot to clear but more of the fault wall exposed. We won't know any more until its cleared and made " safe ".( Ha Ha)

Martin and Snablet went out so we three hauled more capped boulders from Brian's Delight. Its a false floor at the bottom now with a long open undercut running below. Hard to see how big so I will remote video it next week. Both digs draughting outwards. So still promising going south. The fault wall continues.
 
Another dig day yesterday.

Picked up Mr Goldie and met Nigel at the car park. Two short poles , angle grinder and scaf clips taken in. I cleared a bit out of Poker's Progress then cut a pole for Nigel to fit across the bottom of the nearside of the dig. What Brian thought was mud on the right side was indeed that but when removed a huge bit of nice solid bedding currently forms a safe wall though its no doubt detached. The rear upright pole was then extended down to a pin in a flatter bit of the bedding. Nothing on the right seems a worry at the moment. Whilst capping and hauling was done I added the Acro and a pole to the pole holding the mesh.That then enabled us to build up into the aven there. I had two goes at filming the rift nearly 3m below. Some screenshots show a loose rocky floor. Nice stal on the fault wall and a loose but small rocks choke at the far end. Once we are at rift floor level we should be able to dig up to the choke and sort it.
At PP there is a stack of boulders to come down which will open up the end. The fault wall goes onward 3m to more boulders with spaces. A bat flew in there and disappeared. Same draught but at least further south than before. Whilst in PP I could hear them digging at the other place.
Hopefully the same crew next week.
 
There is a void below the downward dig. It follows the fault wall and has been washed out by flowing water after the choke has formed. Same for both choke digs in QWUH. This a screenshot from my remote video on a selfie stick. Although poor res its easier to screenshot video when you cant see what the camera sees. Sadly you get no idea of scale but it does help in dig planning. So 2m down this void goes forward two or three metres to a loose choke of smaller rocks. Nice stal on the fault wall. We shall have to wait until we get down there.

Can photogrammetry software help with your ‘scale’ question? Can’t offer a definitive answer but maybe others on here can. Bit of a niche (in every sense) application; over to the hive mind.
