rope running

Anybody used those little petzl clamps for your foot.
I tried it once with an old croll and some bungie to strap it on. Swung about at the bottom of Alum pot going nowhere fast in full view of about a million people. sacked it off as a bad idea.

Petzl Pantin: they're really quite helpful if you've got a crap prusik technique and want to make life simpler and pitch climbing quicker - OK so you've got to think about them a bit more when dealing with rebelays & deviations etc. but on the whole they make ascents easier - e.g. you don't need to pull the rope down as you begin your ascent `cos the Pantin's holding the rope tight from the word go. I suspect the reason you had problems with an old Croll is that the Pantin's spring is significantly softer... the device barely holds the rope at all and it only locks when the teeth bite on the kernmantle. OK so they're not very cheap but once you've tried one I bet you like it so much you'll always take it with you, especially if you're pruskiing up a pitch of any great height. A highly recommended bit of kit which I love like it's a cute fluffy kitten. :D

Visit www.petzl.com and at the Quicksearch box type "B02" or "Pantin"; the little devices retail for about £35ish (scorchio!).

I lurve my Pantin!! :) - I definitely arrive at the top of the pitch fresher and ready for more!! - not really worth the bother for a little pitch but over 20m its the biz!

Unfortunately you're telling the truth for once. To be fair I haven't really used it a lot and as much as it annoys me I have a sneaking feeling that perseverance will pay off. Not that I've persevered much with it.

do you have to adjust your frog rig at all - I seem to remember the Caving supplies catalog having complicated diagrams with shortened footloops tucked behind kneepads and things.

I'll buy it off you if your wanting rid.

I tried to prussik with one once, but didn't get anywhere really. It's ok if you've got the leg strength to prussik on one leg, but I haven't  .

Nah just pop it on the inside of your right foot and of you go! It pulls the rope tight down through the Croll which is why it makes things more energy efficient - plus you can use both feet at once (I don't know about you but putting both feet in my footloop just doesn't feel right at all!)

You need to learn the little knack of geting the thing off the rope without reaching down cos if you don't you could find yourself in a little narrow bit with your right foot going ever upwards faster than your body!

Rope climbing style is exactly the same as a Frog but if you feel like it you can try a sort of climbing a ladder technique (it's like Ropewalking but without the fiddling about with the rig....) which is very fast but only for short bursts - you have t keep your body very upright - can't really describe it very well on here!!

Yeah, the movement was described to me as 'like riding a unicycle', alternating legs, which was the technique I found really hard going. I had a go with both feet together, but my left foot kept kicking the pantin off the rope. I much prefer the frog rig, but for me having both feet in the loop is comfiest, especially near the bottom - I like to use my feet to pull the rope tight. I guess I'm just more of a traditionalist than a gadget freak!

I'll probably give it a good go before I curse it, whack it repeatedly with a hammer and then sell it.
