Rowten Pot

Planning on heading down Rowten this weekend (weather permitting)

Topo shows as needing a 70m rope for the section from the bridge down the main shaft. I’m hoping to do this with the swing across to start heading down flyover route. I don’t have a 70m rope. Is there any combination of ropes (got a few in the 30-40 range) that I can use that won’t result in a knot pass. The previous 45m rope looks like it could be split with the 70, but without knowing the actual pitch lengths it’s difficult

You can descend from a y-hang at anchor 15 on the CNCC topo and swing over to the far wall at anchor 51 or 52. This would certainly be possible with shorter ropes, but I don't know exactly what lengths would be optimal as I always do it with a single long rope. This route is possible in most conditions.

I'm not sure if they are exactly the same bolt positions, but the older Dave Elliot SRT guide shows a 55m rope for rope from around CNCC bolt 12 to bolt 55. It also shows a 'Pitch Length' from bolt 19 to a presumed landing of 38m.

There are more bolts in the bridge section on the new CNCC topo

My interpretation would be a 30m rope for bolts 12-19 and a 40m for bolts 19-55 (maybe? just?)

From memory, a 50m followed by a 60m will get you from the surface to the spray-lashed ledge at the bottom of the main shaft. I swing straight across to the muddy ledge at the bottom of the first pitch, though ... easier, safer and saves lots of rope!

I think that’s the route I took when I did it with Bean a few years back. I’m gonna try it with a combination of 40ish metre ropes and see where I end up - probably 3metre off the floor with a knot wedged up against my descender - wish me luck!
