Signing in to YouTube

Suddenly, yesterday I found that I was being asked to sign in to YouTube after many years of not having to. This was for any video. Now call me paranoid but the less the big tech companies know of my life the better I like it. Has anyone else found this and does anyone know any way of sidestepping the sign in requirement?

I use yt-dlp.
Downloads what you want direct. No ads. You can select the video resolution, or just the audio track. There are various graphical front ends as well, including for Android.

Thanks, wellyjen. I'm a bit backward with taking on new technology/software etc. I clicked on the link in your reply - is the link at the very top of the page what I need to click on to download? Or is it further down where there's a black box that says 'Download'? Sorry to be a thicko!

If you follow wellyjen's link and scroll down the page to Installation and then Detailed Instructions there are buttons to download the program for Windows or Macos. Then there are instructions on how to use it - it's 'command line' not a graphical interface, ie, you need to type in instructions in the right format, not click on things. You might find that if you're not used to that kind of thing, it's not for you, but then you only learn by having a go.

I fear you may be hitting my nail on its head here? I'm always worried with these 'techy' things that I might well break something. Not so long ago this phone I'm using decided (for no reason I could see) to just lose the background image I'd put in of my dear old cat, Charlie. I still can't work it out.
I might try and create a Google profile (I had one once but haven't used it for years) and use that purely for YouTube signing in (if that's at all possible).

are you sure you cant watch anything without being logged in? I definitely can

Here's the thing - it's not totally one thing or another. It's doing some odd stuff. This morning I was trying to watch something and it wouldn't let me, telling me I have to sign in. Later (perhaps an hour), it let me watch the clip without being signed in. However, when I tried to watch another related clip it blocked me (but saying nothing about signing in just that the content was unavailable). There's no consistency here. I was wondering if this was being rolled out by Google/YouTube on an area by area basis (I'm in north Lancashire). I should add that I wasn't watching anything dodgy or age-related (unless you can describe Stephen Colbert or Jimmy Kimmel as such).

I've noticed this too. I've no idea what criteria Google uses, but I'd guess they might be some combination of IP address, HTTP User Agent and whether it's a "PC" or an Android device.

Big Clive is working fine for me using Firefox 147.0.4 on Gentoo Linux with IPv6 going over a Hurricane Electric tunnel and popping out in London (it used to be California). I wonder why they changed that? New laws or technical improvements? When it was California I had to disable IPv6 for Youtube. I clear cookies on tab close.

It doesn't work, using Fennec, a Firefox build for Android, on a boring Samsung tablet, over the same IP addresses.

Things seem to have gone back to normal (ie no signing in required). No idea what was going on as I never changed anything.

About a month ago I was suddenly asked to sign in to You Tube.
After about a week it went back to normal, and I have not been asked to sign in since.

Their terms and conditions state they can ask you to log in. Usually it's because something has occured on the network that they are not in control of.
If you're determined to not have an account, try rebooting your router and computer every time this happens.

But why not sign in?

Asking to prove you are not a bot will not go away.
You don't have to put in your details, you could even make a junk email account.

At some this will probably be mandatory anyway

I've just shut the phone down (I don't use my laptop much as hotspotting it off the phone seems to use a lot more data) and cleared the cache and memory. It seems like service has been restored. I'm a bit paranoid about putting much personal data online so don't like signing in/up for anything if I can avoid it. I'm a bit of an old grump and don't like Facebook etc (used to use stuff like that for business but not any more).
