Steel caving gear WD40 v GT85

Quick advice: which is preferred rust prevention, lubricant for steel krabs, maillons otc? WD40 vs GT85 maybe? Not keen on  oil, will get everywhere. I recall that yera ago, on return from Picos expedition, someone dunked all the club maillons in a tub of engine oil, not best idea, kit was covered in oil for ages!

ACF-50 anti-corrosion/lubricant thin fluid film it is what we use on the aircraft, as well as my motorbikes (and caving metal bits).

They are similar in many ways but WD40 is biased towards dispersing water  (WD = Water Dispersant) which can retain a bit of stickiness. With e.g. auto/twist lock carabiners I've found that WD40 seems to result in worse dust/grit sticking and grinding in the gates later on than aerosol 3in1 or GT85, and that was just from climbing, not full on underground muck.
GT85 gets my vote (unless it's a distributor cap/ht!)

People who oil / protect - does it make a difference? I used to do this and gave up, and my kit doesn't seem to go rusty as long as I dry it when I get home. But perhaps it's worth doing it?

Given the price of a tin of GT you are not kidding when you say you are cheap! 

You should factor in the time difference between oiling and spraying at your usual hourly rate......then you will GT !!

Bit of olive oil - neutral. Might be completely wrong, but isn't there an issue with engine oil and the like in weakening your rope / webbing if you get it on it?

As a non-driver, 3 cans at ?24.99 to just lubricate my maillon threads, is definitely expensive. I've always used fishing-reel grease on my maillon threads, and it seems to last several trips. Some have been in Longcliffe for about three years now, so we'll see how they fare when I try to unscrew them!

Are all divers well off Phil , this one certainly isn't !. I don't know where your shopping for it I pay ?2.20 + VAT from my trade supplier  ;)

Well I looked on Amazon - thought you had to buy a three-pack, but seems they do singles too. I did say I'm not a driver! I'll nip down Halfords tomorrow as I think they still allow pedestrians in there :)

my advice is to read a few manufacturer webpages.

my preference is 3 in 1 - light dab on threads and and wipe all over with a cloth.

I use 3 in 1 in  one of these ... perfect for accurately putting one tiny drop on without getting it everywhere.  Gates for krabs etc.
Note that the base of the can is slightly sprung, so you have to apply a little pressure with your thumb on the base to get the drop to form so its really easily controlled.
