Surface digging near Goatchurch Cavern

Chris

I'll give you a bell later, probably this evening, I am very busy for the rest of today.

The last time there was an unauthorised surface dig in this area, the perpetrator was tracked down & made to remedy his actions, which he did.

I should like to put it on record that the back-filling work was kindly done by Axbridgecaver (Al) and Tree Monkey (Doug) who happily gave of their time freely to ensure this situation was remedied.

No not happily - I missed my evening digging. Still a good job done.

I wouldn't say i was exactly tracked down Graham! i owned up to digging on the ham and made safe a potentially dangrgerous area with a old mine shaft only inches below the surface. The problem that i see is at that time i was nieve to the land rights of the Burrington area, and didnt realise that common land wasnt common and that UBSS held the digging rights! I suggest that if the people involved in this dig above Goachurch are acvive club members, then prehaps some information should be passed to clubs in the region advising them that permission must be given by UBSS and the Commoners. Just because we know what Common land means in the Burrington area, not all, especially new and enthusiastic cave exporers might not! Im not condoning whats been happening above goatchurch and if they are vetran cavers there is no excuse, BUT if they are young and nieve i think we should take note and advise new club members of which we all have an active role.

Sorry, mate, didn't intend to imply you were hiding.

It would be nice to think that whoever is behind this affair would have the decency to own up rather than hide but I suppose we shall have to wait and see what the caving grapevine produces...
