Survex guide for Dummies

Figured I'd start putting some dummed down tutorials together for the ULSA surveying project. This is the first of hopefully many tutorials for beginners, enjoy :)

I'm new to surveying myself so would be useful if I can get some feedback, I'm also Dyslexic so expect spelling/grammar mistakes :p

- also some of the Examples might only open properly/make sense with Notepad++

Looks great Brendan. I hope you do continue with it, it will be really useful for other beginners. I just found the page 'LRUD's Part 2' a little confusing.
Turning the survex output into an actual survey is the really tricky bit and there's no manual for it. Unless you manage to get your head round Therion, then the best option seems to be a drawing package like Inkscape. Have you started drawing up the survey yet and do you plan to do tutorials for that process as well?

Hi Adam, thanks for the feedback :), yeah I'll be honest I don't really understand the whole LRUD thing, I've sent it off to someone else to modify it, hopefully version 2 will be easier to understand and I'll learn something in the process.

I hope to learn how to use therion one day, I've had a little play around with it on expedition but i think I'm going to have to get someone to teach me how to use it, can't make any sense of the manual.

Inkscape and GIMP are easier to use but they have the limitation that you can't easily warp passages to fit loop closures. ULSA is planning on using a program called Tunnle, it's basically the same as therion in that you can draw a cave and get the drawing to warp to fit loop closures. However it doesn't really do elevation very well, maybe it'll get an update one day. 

Might put something together about tunnel next, there are a lot of tutorials/exercises inside the software already when you download it so it's pretty easy to learn, the only thing it doesn't teach you is how to import a centerline and sketch to draw on top of, so I'll probably focus on that.

@Brendan, great guide :) Did you ever do the part two... the 'cave jigsaw' bit? I'm struggling with how to join multiple survey files together.

Sadly Brendan never did make that Part II (I asked him the same question back when I was trying to figure out the same issue myself). However I did eventually manage to work out how to do it by reverse engineering the Survex sample data of the Loser Plateau that you can download from the Survex website.

In 2020 was involved in this cave surveying livestream where I explained how to do this with Survex - the video is a bit rambly but the key bit you're looking for is from minute 34 onwards.

Hope it's of use. Lemme know how you get on with linking up the different surveys - probably the fiddliest thing to get your head around as a new Survex user.
