Swildon's Hole: clearing stuff out

Radon gas is a hazard in any enclosed spaces, not just caves and mines. I cant recall the context but i remember reading a study looking at infant mortality (leukaemia i think) in NE england, and it was found to be more prevalent in upper social classes- one reason being that the quality of housing was better, with double glazing etc which excluded many draughts, however it also trapped radon gas in the home. There was a monitoring study in newcastle that showed this link very nicely too.

I think you could improve airflow at Swildons Sump One by lowering the water level.
Go back a few metres up stream, clear the loose stuff down to solid limestone, then with premix cement make a dam with loose lumps of limestone.
Then rip the floor out of the sump, bringing the loose stuff back and depositing upstream of the new dam.
As long as you can lower the floor enough there is a good chance you could lower the water level by a couple of inches.
It might work :!:

You could also improve the air in Swildon's by taking the roof off.

No-one would ever be able to justify altering Swildon's Hole to such an extent that sump one ceased to exist. It's a non-topic, best left.

Funnily enough the area where I live is supposedly such a high risk radon area that when I had an extension built recently it had to have a ventilated radon sump built into it.
Living on the ironstone highlands to the East of Watford Gap it wasn't something I was expecting. Subsequent testing has shown only normal levels of radon in the house.

But if sump one went - nobody could again become a true son of Mendip - and go through sump one :!:   :D

Truly baptised "sons of Mendip" fall into the double Pots not sump 1.

I don't agree with the cairns idea - its bad enough with pointless cairns all over the place on some hills (especially in the Lakes) without introducing the problem underground. If you must leave markers of some sort - take them out with you afterwards.

that's what I meant, maybe i didn't make it quite clear in my original post

There's an Iron bar + pots and pans in a white plastic bag just down from Tratmans in the streamway,
is this rubbish that needs bringing out ? or is it needed for a dig somewhere.

If it needs bringing out I don't mind taking it with me.

Sorry, Stu, I forgot to update this thread. Yes, the bag and pole etc. is due for removal from the cave; Martin G and I brought it over from t'other side of Black Hole but were sufficiently knackd by the time we got to the streamway (underneath Tratman's Temple) that we decided to call it A. Day and leave it there for someone else to bring out of the cave....

So, if you'd like to be a hero and drag it out and chuck it in the bin/skip then please feel free!
