Swildons names

I'm just trying to clarify names to make sure we get these right in an important piece of text.

Is it "Sump 7" or "Sump VII" or "Sump Seven"?

Also, is the passage preceding this sump "Swildons Six" or "Swildons  6"?

We've consulted various incarnations of Mendip caving guides and the CDG Somerset Sump Index and met with inconsistencies.

Would welcome the thoughts of folk who know about these things; thanks.

I'm not sure on the numbering or naming convention relating to the actual number itself but the passage between sump 6 and 7 is know as Swildons 7.

Everyone who visits Swildons visits Swildons 1 by the same logic...

Swildons 1
Sump 1
Swildons 2
Sump 2
Etc

Similarly in Stoke Lane Slocker and possibly other Mendip caves

Except in wookey, where there are openings all over the place & they weren't found in order...

Sorry, I should have explained; I'm interested in the correct original names (given by discoverers) for these places is Swildons.

Historically the sumps/passage in Swildon's used Roman numerals (which is what you'll find on early surveys), also for Stoke Lane as well.

Modern convention is to use Arabic numerals.  Its a matter of choice whether to use numerals or write the number alphanumerically.  Sometimes interchangeably and inconsistently.

I notice that Wooding was inconsistent in the ICDG reports: "This sump was passed - tight and about 10' long, to Swildons IX" and "Sump 6a of the 6 complex..."

Yes - there is some inconsistency but if you want to keep to the traditional historical names it should be Swildon's Seven and Sump VII.  See the Swildon's Hole book, Swildon's Hole 100 Years of Exploration, MU5 and the Swildon's Hole surveys.

NB. The passage preceeding Sump VII is Swildon's Seven not Swildon's Six (which is before Sump VI).

This is proving helpful - thanks to those who have posted above so far (especially Ali for correcting my schoolboy error!  :-[ )
