The forum

Even our club is split with two thirds on FB and two thirds using a newsgroup, and the info that appears on them does have distinct differences (digging and historical stuff being more likely on the newsgroup).

Ukcaving is definitely the best resource available for getting info from outside your club, and seeing what is going on in other areas - such as the recent red rose open house, which was a fun event I probably wouldn't of known about otherwise.

Gave up Farcebook moons ago, always been a forum slut from the beginning: Darkplaces, Mine Explorer, Aditnow, 28 Days Later, UK Caving and many more.

I prefer to get specialist information from specific sources and not sell out to the TechBros.

Keep this vital resource going, it has become a valuable tool for ALL of us.

Above quoted from the meme thread

It stings to read the comment above when we try so hard to make UKC a positive online place for cavers. (Not aimed at you mikem, but the comment itself)

I'd love to know if cavers who are boycotting UKC are levelling the same standards to other platforms they use?

A quick search will highlight many articles about online bullying, toxicity and abuse on a huge range of issues from politics to body image. Without doubt, it's easy to find reasons to boycott the major social media platforms.

Compare and contrast:

UKC is run on a voluntary basis and on a not for profit basis for the use of the whole UK caving community. It's free, it's for ALL cavers. Meta, X etc are making billions.

It is owned by cavers. Have an issue? You can literally message either Tim (Badlad) or myself (Jane/Pegasus) and we will respond in person - good luck getting through to Mark Z or Elon et al.

UKC is incredibly fortunate to have a fabulous Moderation Team who hail from all areas of the country, are also volunteers and try their very best to keep UKC a safe and happy place - contrast that with other social media platforms and their standards of moderation.

A positive reminder: Despite some cavers choosing not to use UKC, plenty are (thank you!). The forum is busy, lots of new threads posted every day on a wide range of subjects (again, thank you!). Recent competitions have given away £100's worth of kit to cavers - some of the popular threads ave been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. We provide a platform for the BCA and regional councils to communicate with cavers, ditto Hidden Earth, plus so much more. We're doing OK 😁 - tell your caving mates!

...and to those of you who describe yourselves as Mendips cavers - thank you for being here -

Pegasus :)

‘Very few Mendips cavers use this forum’ is a very sweeping statement to make, I’d love to see the data on which this assertion is based.

As a Mendip caver, I’d hazard a guess it was a throwaway comment based upon absolute bullsh**

A hard fact to verify. I would say more visit the forum but far less actually post here. So it depends how you define " use ". I could rustle up a list of regular Mendip posters but then they might prefer anonimity. As a percentage on Mendip people who post here fairly regularly I would guess at %10. We dont even know what constitutes a Mendip Caver. If its those that belong to a Mendip based club another guess would be 1,000. So at %10 we would expect 100 posting regularly.

What has a larger circulation than UkC in terms of caving? Apart from direct mail from BCA, I'd say not much.

Another factor that denotes ,lets say minimal, Mendip coverage is the number of active Mendip digs that are mentioned here. That may well be %10 as well.

I doubt anyone would consider it wise to put their head above the parapet and self-incriminate themselves and their activities which may (or may not) be subject to having lots of supporting documentation that they may (or may not) actually have.

I personally would like to see a tab for links to uk exploration teams blogs, we may see more happening that way...and it would save people having to upload lots of photos in lots of different places.

With the blog an editor from my caving club (Wessex) can download high resolution photos and copy paste whatever log entries they desire. Keeping a digging record, for example is much easier on a blog than on a forum...and the overall theme is up to the blog writer.

This is not a snub at forums I'm just offering a solution, add a tab for links to cave explorers blogs.

There's plenty out there to see if you know how to access it.

I got into trouble by linking a digging account. Anyway anyone who writes a blog can easily copy and paste the text here. You have to be careful with copyright though. Some Mendip blogs are " open " like White Rabbit and Halloween Rift. Others like Vurley remain closed. Ultimately the poor old journal editor is at the end of the queue and might not be too happy. We had a great contributor for Wrecksite. Now he promotes his videos on Facebook to be viewed on U Tube.

Not really, some people don't what to show off but they do appreciate being able to view goings on.

I had a few digs on here I was following but they get lost in the noise if people don't post, so a quick go to couldn't hurt.

Also I'm sure there are some people that don't post on forums because of negative feedback and unsupportive comments ✌️
