The Mine Shafts Project. Hydrology.

Interesting about the killas as at the other end of the mine there are quite a few cavities in it and we did start a dig there following a solutional tube so let us keep our fingers crossed it is a good omenl

OK. I have a new keyboard. A digging and etc trip last night. There will be lots to do next time. We are now clearing all the dumped bags, rocks etc from the " chamber " half way along The Hole In The Wall. It occurred to me that much will look the same underground in a thousand years time so best to leave it tidy. The shaft water level has flatlined the last two months 2m above the previous lowest point recorded even though the shaft and tunnels are very dry. An odd dig for me looking for hypothetical caverns which could be entirely in the opposite direction or 50m along from where we are now. The whole of THITW is man made.

Another session yesterday so still driving the tunnel in the direction of the lost caverns ( maybe ! ) . Final probe took us 18m in with the small vugh going forward. We shall continue until one of us dies I guess.

Well as you see we are still going making about one metre every five sessions. Yesterday was session 86 at The Hole In The Wall now 17.5m in. Mind you at this rate it could take another ten years to reach the farthest postulated point of the caverns. Then again it might be in the next five sessions. Such is cave digging. Oh we might even be going the wrong way entirely . Perhaps the answer to this stupidity lies in that £140 book.

Pete, Mike and me. A good session removing 22 tub loads from the end and the 8 bags from last week. The shaft water has gone up nearly a metre since Friday and is now touching the bottom platform support .The traverse pole well under water. The alcove is covered. Strangely the furthest half of the dig is bone dry and warm. The adit was flowing at about twice the usual amount. It was a wet and windy drive home in the hill mist and darkness. My garden rain guage today has recorded 325mm of rain for Jan. with lots of local flooding. The dig face is 17.5m from the platform and c 18.5m from the entrance heading SE. I would like to see how that relates to the surface. THITW is gently dropping downhill putting the floor at the dig face c 18m below the surface. Thats 9m above the floor of the final bit of the alcove dig below though at that point we had lost the lode.
Our next planned visit will be Friday at 2.15 .
