The new Gaping Gill book is ready to order!

I just learned that Howard Beck's brand new book about Gaping Gill and Ingleborough Cave will be back from the printers shortly and it can now be ordered, via: https://speleobookshop.co.uk/the-lost-river

Many folk will be aware that Howard authored one on this subject way back in 1984. The new book is completely re-written (not an updated "second edition"). Produced by Wild Places Publishing, it has received the Howes / Calford attention to detail and is hard backed. At £25 it's a steal for a book of this quality.

It'll be ready to collect at the conference (last weekend in September) or you can have it by post. I've a pretty good idea of just how much work has gone into this project and I can't wait to get my own copy! Further details are available in the link above.

We'll have to wait and see. They're both hydrologically connected of course. (The former drains to Terminal Lake and the latter drains to the Upstream Passages / Gothic Arch Sump, both within Ingleborough Cave.)

That's interesting. I knew there were links but not where they came in. Do you know what the nature of those links are (eg impenetrable inlets or just water tracing results)?

Water tracing, both going to upstream sump pools in Ingleborough Cave. Both joining main flows, in each case somewhere underwater, further upstream. Actual inlets just from GRP & HMP aren't known.

I think the thing with HMP at least is the flow to IC is relatively small and the main ancient development goes elsewhere. Isn't the GRP stream seen again in the LUSS P5 extensions en route to Terminal Lake? (Langcliffe may be able to help here?)

If I recall correctly the GRP water comes in P5 via Shrimp Passage. Colin Boothroyd did dive this and if my memory serves me correctly said the passage shape was similar to GRP. A write up should be in LUSS 4?

There is a downstream part of Shrimp Passage (to the right as you enter from Barnstormer). I always fancied digging there but life events took over and I haven't been back since the initial exploration was completed.

I think I recall you speculating in another Gaping Gill thread about the possibility of very old passages as yet unknown. Now that would put the book out of date ...

Here are the main references, for anyone interested in the detail:

Colin did two dives in the P5 upstream sump in March 1986. Several airbells were encountered and he reached a point 65 m in. The dive logs suggest that, although the going became somewhat challenging, he didn't reach a definite conclusion due to having a high pressure leak on his second dive.

After re-reading the Pay Sank chapter in 'Adventures Underground' I was wondering if there was anyone still looking for the potential P5 Mastercave that Bob Leakey had postulated? With a more straightforward route to the lower reaches and the onward march of capping technology would this be a feasible project (he wonders from the comfort of his armchair)?
