What caving related thing did you do today?

I'm a few days late posting, but on Saturday, I took my 10 (nearly 11) year old down Redhouse for the first time.

Here he is in Cryogenic Causeway. Photo courtesy of Falkland Anderson

Hi Pete, presumably that means that your lad had to negotiate the rather unpleasant-sounding entrance series ?

Well done, him.

Yes, though all the small stuff is actually much easier if you're small!

He's not been through any ducks like that before, so I wasn't sure how he'd find it psychologically. I was also worried about him getting cold. Despite being flooded out by this time last year, water levels are still really low, and he had no problems. I put him in a shorty wetsuit underneath his fury suit, and he reported being warm enough throughout.

This is Toad Duck, I think, which is about as wet as it got. Again, photo by Falky.

Finally got some books out of a box and onto a shelf, bit of a bittersweet moment.

(Warning, it gets a bit soppy)
Since moving to Germany a couple of months ago I’ve kept pretty busy, and of course it‘s exciting to explore new caves. The caving is very different, completely exploration focussed and to be fair I’ve found more cave in the last three months than in 10 years of digging in the UK. But there is nothing close to the caving club culture of the UK, and sport caving is in effect non-existent.
Having formed an absurd Stockholme-y relationship with Peak Cavern I honestly miss it, and I can’t help but look at my old guidebooks with a profound sense of loss. A place I know so well, have spent so much quality time in, made so many memories and I won’t really see again. I can visit, but I’ll be a tourist.
Even worse I’m denied the joy of jumping into the TSG at 9am on a Saturday, loudly shouting „Guten Morgen!“ to get people out of bed for digging.

Sad for us too :( Germany's (re)gain is Derbyshire's loss

Indeed - he's a good worker, and never asked for money. Note sensible earplugs ;)

A few days late, but a few shots from one of the digs, after a long break. To let it settle, amongst other things, but it hadn't moved at all, which is reassuring, given the location. Still a bit spicy though, with blocks of vein material mixed in with natural, and black limestone mixed with white. Photo 4 is a potential way on. But we have our first stalactites, which is very reassuring, as it means that bit definitely hasn't moved in a while
