Spent a ridiculously long amount of time trying to scrub ochre off my wellies from last night's caving trip. Glad I didn't wear my oversuit as a boiler suit is much easier to deal with!

Get yourself a green "chemical coverall". Much easier to clean: just hose down. I've got two, one for digging and one for standing around marshalling in Gaping Gill main chamber - they are more waterproof than a Warmbac and have a hood which goes easily over my helmet to stop water going down the back of my neck when going through the waterfall.

Keep an eye on eBay for "Alpha Solway Green Coverall", they sometimes go for £40 or less.

My partner wore one of these (we had a few spares left from when we bought them to remove some flooring which was glued on with aspestos bitchumen)

Yet more shaft work

Spent all this afternoon fettling a pair of uprights from 4.5" steam pipe, for our ongoing Nenthead dig.

We had a pair in stores but found to be too short, hence the welded-on extensions.

The slots in the top are for the header span, namely a 4ft section of inverted rail.
Once in position they are permanently located with stainless M12 allthread stud through holes drilled in the tops of the legs
Brackets are attached prior to final assembly to fix tie-bars between setts.

Tuesday Diggers ( Mining Section ) annual BBQ. Old people snaffling burnt sausages. A change from the pie and crisps.

Due to the unexpected number of 'likes' (thank you, folks) here are a couple more photos

1) with dummy header span to show application (the eagle-eyed will have spotted the different leg lengths -
this is deliberate, as there is a 25mm variation across the face L/R

2) Detail of the bearing channel showing the drilled holes for studding and bracket attachment.
The rail header will sit upside-down in the slot with its flange uppermost and protruding.
The rail crown can be shimmed to take up any slack at the bottom of the slot.

The spiles are 11ft rails alternating with 5x2" treated timber.

Only on digs can you get a tractor in; it's a bit more compact at HW
