Where is the 'delete my account' button?

There isn't one.

If you no longer wish to use your account just stop using it.  We don't hold any personal data of yours bar your email address so this can be changed if required.

It might be that someone wants to disassociate themselves from any comments that they have made in the past. In that case I would assume that the mods could lock the account, remove the email address and change the username without posting the name change to the forum?

We can delete the account but all former posts default to being posted by "guest".  This is ok if only one or two users do it, but it makes old conversations unreadable if there's more than one such user in a given topic.

We don't like to delete posts (unless it's something somebody quickly regrets and specifically asks us to soon after they've posted) because once they've been replied to or are buried in a long topic it has the potential to render that topic meaningless. This really isn't fair on the forum as a whole - if you signed up and posted stuff in public for all to see, it's a bit lame to expect it all to be wiped at some point in the future when you may regret what you've posted in the past.

A good solution might be to change the username of the user to something like "guest 01", "defunct user xx", etc.

...and off all other social media too because non of them are perfect either are they??
This is first and foremost a caving forum. We know from experience certain off caving topics can cause strong emotions on many sides. Moderating such arguments is not easy. There is no billion pound backing for UKC, no swish headquarters and staff of thousands. It's Tim and I and a fab team of volunteer moderators (thanks all). It's hard work constantly monitoring heated threads, so forgive us (or in this case obviously not) if sometimes we close a difficult thread.

To be honest it gets a bit tiring reading 'I'm out', makes me wonder why we put so much time and effort into running a free, not for profit, forum for the benefit of all cavers to use.

Sigh.....

Definitely, I'm in too! Don't do much (any) caving these days, in fact I haven't done much of anything since I lost my wife last December after 52 years together. At times being able to log in here and share in the UKC family has been a lifesaver. Thank you, one and all!

Hello Roger, oh my. I've gone from being pretty annoyed to being quite emotional in the best of ways. Thank you so much for your post, it absolutely makes running the forum worthwhile.
I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your wife, though glad to hear you both had so long together. Sending a hug and love and a promise to keeping the forum here for as long as we can xxx

Rogers post is interesting that it reflects my situation, or at leat developing situation in a way. I was 78 early this year but am doing OK, bar knee issues which come and go, plus a few other things. I have not been undergound much for some time, started with first lockdown when I took the oportunity to start work on my home that needed doing. I figured that I needed to get it all done while I can as at my age I dont know whats round the corner.. I live on my own being a widower, we never had kids, my late wife couldn't. So I tend to regard my friends as my substitute family, its mainly the karate and aikido clubs I go to, training is on and off due to issues, but I go anyway and do as much as I can, they work round me. Same on here, old friends from aditnow and new ones as well, this is my social media. Undergound exploration is mainly solo, but I do get to see mining friends now and again, get togethers up at Nenthead plus various meetings etc.

Main thing with me is to never give up, I intend to get back undergound including some serious trips, and I also have my sights on a second dan in karate, probably never been known before at my age, at least a proper one not a 'Micky Mouse' one.

So there we are, bareing my soul on UKC, if UKC wasnt I would not be able to do it!
