Where to get decent wellies?

Before i go to the alps in a few weeks i need to get some new wellies. I havent bought any for years - my last two pairs have been inherited from other cavers who bought the wrong size

First i had some of the Etche ones sold by Starless River (I think in 40 or 41). The lack of lining is great, however the fit leaves a lot to be desired (massively wide toebox and very narrow heel) - would prefer some better fitting ones

Then i was given a pair of the green Dunlop ones with yellow band and black sole which Inglesport used to stock, in 41. Ive always liked the fit of these and i had wanted to buy another pair, only to find this weekend that they have been discontinued

Where can i get a similar pair of wellies? If anyone has a pair of the aforementioned dunlops in size 41 going spare, i would gladly buy them; or alternatively if anyone knows of another model i could buy with a similar fit to the dunlops, decent tread (really disliked the tread and heaviness of the ones Inglesport now stock) and ideally no liner that would be amazing!

Sounds like you might have to make your own ;-)

I have used the Etche wellies for years and I don't think I would swap to anything else.

The green Dunlop Acifort wellies are the my go to caving and surface wellies. They sound like the ones you are after.
When you say discontinued, do you mean Inglesport no longer stock them or that Dunlop have discontinued them. If the later, I might be inclined to buy up a pair or three online.

Screwfix size 9 wellies. Lots of choice. Two outlets within 5 miles of me, YMMV. Toolstation are probably much the same.

Screwfix don't stock all sizes, so advised to check online first

I suspect Screwfix can get most sizes but you'd need to order 24 hours ahead before collecting.

Screwfix can indeed get them next day, but don't generally go smaller than size 7

I use Lawson HIS for wellies. Recently bought the Dunlop actifort with the red sole. They do for me.

I believe the red rim indicates steel toecap etc. Mine have yellow and have no steel toreap but my wife had a pair with red and did have a steel toecap but she thought they were heavy and swapped for yellow.

I've consistently bought wellies from Go Outdoors Sheffield. Dunlop ones that don't have a yellow stripe, literally just green with black sole. Size 39 feet (think that's 6/6.5?). They're not the most durable, probably have to swap them every two years (about 100 trips), but they've always been £10-20 so not a massive expenditure.

They have been discontinued in their original green & yellow line design. I don't think the new ones are the same.

Yes - the red are safety wellies ie - steel plate in the sole and steel toe cap. Bugs me that the red striped safety wellies are cheaper than the yellow striped wellies. But I guess that might e down to production run numbers perhaps

Probably due to being PPE and vat regulations or something... Steel plates in the soles are better for somethings, a friend did a load of fixed ladders in a mine with lightweight wellies and could still feel the rungs hours latter...

I'm also in the market for new wellies. Have been using the green with yellow stripe Dunlops but now there are literally chunks of material coming away from the sole.

My preferences for good wellies would include a good fit, good grip, no steel toe cap, reasonable light weight and robustness.

What would be great though, are wellies with a decent midsole, something like a walking boot so that you don't feel every rock/pebble through them, leaving you with sore feet at the end of a trip.

Any suggestions are welcome.

These. Revolutionary. Not cheap. Very comfortable. Wear duration surprisingly well. - no shank so don't jump on sharp things (eg garden fork) but otherwise fine for standing on rocks/edges etc. the hoofproof linked above has the equivalent of a toe cap and you can kick rocks quite happily.

Really makes a massive difference being so much lighter than any other wellie. Every time you lift your foot you feel it! I've had a pair for 2 years - caving perhaps 1/month.

These do sound good - however they seem to have somd kind of fabric liner

How thick is the liner material? What is the material? Im concerned it would become very damp and skanky after wearing for multiple days in a row...

I use the Dunlop pricemasters. They last well, they fit well and they’re mega cheap

I'm also looking for new wellies. I always used the yellow Actiforts; I may try the LBC ones.

I find a strong shank in a welly is important for me, especially on rough, bouldery ground. I have noticed the softer soled wellies have caused problems in bruising and tenderness on longer trips.

As a cautionary tale, I also favour steel toecaps for protection. This was after a trip when a huge slab peeled off a wall and landed on my foot. It dented the steel toecaps I was fortunately wearing at the time but still put me out of action for a week. If I hadn't worn the steel toecaps I would have lost all my toes for sure. Always used the steelies since.
