Which SDS Drill ??

I have both  the Bosch 36V compact and the Bosch 18V.  I use both regularly for digging, mostly capping but also for placing bolts (both for pitches and securing scaffolding to rock).  Both have put up with some severe abuse in terms of bashing around, dropping and getting plastered in wet mud on a regular basis.  I have not noticed a great deal of difference in the performance, in terms of numbers of holes per battery or speed of drilling.  I have 3 x 1.3Ah batteries for the 36V and 4 x 3Ah for the 18V.  There is also not a lot of difference in weight/ bulk between the two of them either, though the 18V 3Ah batteries are noticeably more compact than the 36V 1.3Ah, so in practice I can usually carry an extra battery for the 18V compared to the 36V for a similar weight / volume.

I did totally wreck the hammer mechanism on my 36V a few years ago (after about 3 years of use, twice a week on average), but I managed to find a knackered one on Ebay whose electronics had packed up.  It was easy enough to swap the internal electronics from my original drill and install them into the mechanically decent one, and this has run without problems for the last few years, though it has been run less frequently as I had bought the 18V one in the meantime.

The 36V compact is much smaller and lighter than the big Bosch 36V, but it has noticeably much less grunt than its big brother.  I know several other people who are using this drill and are very happy with it.  Including one who keeps the drill stored underground at his dig so he only has to transport batteries in and out (its a long way from the surface, the drill is packed in a  suitable container with loads of silica gel).  I bought both of my drill on special offers, the 36V was ?300 with two batteries and the 18V was ?265 with two batteries (I got two more later, again on special offer).

I have been very happy with both these drill, but I have to say that if I had to replace them tomorrow, I would have a long hard look at the Makita 18V.

No, 'brushless' motors usually work on AC, not suitable for battery machines, the Bosch EC drills use a spring loaded contact to the armature, this often burns out when battery voltage gets low, (i.e. when voltage drops, current increases causing burnout) I have a couple of examples of this, -  drills in bits!. I would advise using a drill with replaceable brushes.

Thats interesting, they must have some fancy electronic switching circuit in them :shrug:
Brushless motors usually work on electromagnetic pulses generated by alternating current.

ive been using a hitachi 24v cordless above and below ground for the last 12 years without any trouble,
tell a lie, i dropped it 120f above the lake in the milwr tunnel . lost the drill in the lake but found the battey (which still works).
joking apart i would highly recommend the hitachi, by all accounts the newer model is even better
 
I have a Makita 14.4V which is about five years old. It gets used regularly in my work and often gets taken underground. Mud is a killer for drills so when I take it underground I tape it up. I mean really tape it up, all the holes completely covered. These drills are designed for a world market and are designed to be used in tropical heat on building sites where they might drill continuously.

If you're bolt climbing in a cave it will get used for ten seconds then rest for a few minutes before another ten second burst in a cold environment. Being used like that it needs no cooling air at all and never feels even slightly warm. I've also used mine for capping and plug and feathering completely taped up. If you were drilling shot holes, which I have never done with this drill, you would have to be a bit careful and check it wasn't getting warm. Just use common sense, think how muddy it is likely to get and how long will  be the bouts of use and decide to tape or not.

I've had mine really caked in mud quite a few times. When I get home I clean it with a sponge then take the tape off and put it in a warm place overnight.

Mine fits in a fairly small Peli with 2 batteries and worked fine for holes in dead ahead, as well as chiselling vienetta. It works for me as all my home tools are 18V XR ones so I have plenty of batteries to share amongst them all.
 
Anyone know the difference between the makita DHR202 and the BHR202 - look exactly the same on specs I think .

Brushes - or Brushless  :shrug:

Obv you can replace brushes, but I suspect I'm not going to be using this day in day out, clocking up hours and hours of run time, leading to worn brushes, as you might expect from a tradesman using it every day.

brushless is sold as being more efficient, longer battery time etc. but is it too good to be true, does anyone have any concerns

moisture ingress? - more electronics, more to go wrong ??

It looks like the D series is for the new 4.0Ah batteries and they might not fit the B series, however it's not entirely clear and also I gleaned the info from somebody looking on a German site so it might not be the same in the UK. You can apparently remove a small piece of plastic from the battery slide to make them backwards compatible in some cases.
