• Help us work out the future of the Inglesport Café

We've been trading since 1977 and next year will be our 50th anniversary.

The café has been part of that for a long time, running quietly in the background for years, and we don't think it always gets the credit it deserves as a genuine community hub. But we need to be straight with you: the café is under real pressure, and we’re not sure of the best path forward.....

Wild flowers

Not sure what these are but they look like rhubarb on steroids and possibly threatening the car? They were near Ardfern in Argyll this morning.

More sea pinks looking towards the Gulf of Corrievreckan between Jura and Scarba. Yesterday, we sailed through there on the paddle steamer Waverley which was a superb day out. Get on it if you can.

They look like Gunnera to me. They're now regarded as invasive, so you're not supposed to plant new ones (though I believe there is a 'bad' subspecies and another that's more acceptable.
It's a bit academic if you don't have an enormous wetland garden...

I just googled Gunnera and got this rather alarming article about an infestation of it in Knoydart of all places
It sounds like another Japanese knotweed in the making.

Gunnera was much used in the 80's gardening make-over show Ground Force. It was prized for it's "architectural qualities" IIRC.

Whilst not 'wild', there's always been a few of these growing by the pond in Whinfell Quarry Garden in Sheffield, but it doesn't seem to have ever spread beyond there. There's plenty of large posh houses with large gardens nearby, and it's literally on the edge of the city, with farmland adjacent, but this one seems to be entirely self-contained. Maybe it's the 'good' variety?

That's also a Giant Redwood in the background.

On the way to Craignish Point in a damp area, the first butterworts of the year I've seen. They catch insects on their leaves but I wish they'd be a bit more proactive with the midges which were starting to be a nuisance.

Fairy foxglove - counted as a wild flower now, I think, but it isn't common. And, of course, the lovely maidenhair fern.
The only other place I noticed them was on the famous 'Bridge over the Atlantic' a few days ago as we drove onto Seil island. We didn't stop so I didn't get a close look unlike today.

Sea pink with a puffin, Lunga in the Treshnish Isles today

There were large areas of bluebells and not a tree in sight. Looking back towards Mull.

Bladder campion

Oh, and some cave on Staffa
Given the location, was it Bladder Campion and not the similar Sea Campion, Silene uniflora? It seems to have only one flower per stem

There's other species of Gunnera including one I used to grow which had a total height of 3 inches and leaves the size of 1/2pennies

Yes, I think you might be right. I think I made a rush id (too keen to go and see my first ever puffins) and fell for my much greater familiarity with the bladder campion.
