• Help us work out the future of the Inglesport Café

We've been trading since 1977 and next year will be our 50th anniversary.

The café has been part of that for a long time, running quietly in the background for years, and we don't think it always gets the credit it deserves as a genuine community hub. But we need to be straight with you: the café is under real pressure, and we’re not sure of the best path forward.....

WIN 5 X DMM PHANTOM SCREWGATE KARABINERS!!

I have loved the recent 'Wildflowers' thread, however did hear Badlad mutter 'It's supposed to be a caving forum' recently. Indeed, however I feel cavers have an inherent love of nature which is why it has been so popular. I also admired the photo of White Rabbit Hole's entrance, described as a 'work of art' :) This has given me an idea for a quick competition to celebrate both!

To be in with a chance of winning 5 DMM Phantom HMS karabiners, post your best 'UK cave entrance' photos on this thread. Merit will be awarded for inclusion of cavers and or flora/fauna.

3 photos per person - so choose carefully, there are lots of cave entrances out there!

Closing date - 10pm, Friday 5th June.

Shortlist to be chosen by me then it's over to random.org.

Good luck - and thank you to everyone who supports my competitions - means a lot (y)

Here is the Wildflower thread

..and here is White Rabbit Hole entrance:

I have a favourite that springs to my mind, although it's not a remotely good photo, just one that perfectly represents a very happy time in my life spent in wonderful company.

This is the entrance to Rowten Pot.

The biblical rain is almost impossible to wipe off the camera lens, hence the terrible smudgey-ness of the the photo. Suzanne is cowering under her piece of corrugated iron in the background, and Ed is beaming with happiness, having had an awesome trip and relishing the insanity of the weather.

This was Exeter University's summer trip to Yorkshire almost a decade ago.

They little, flora in this, but there is a wild Alex! This is up in Yokenthwaite area. I was sat getting changed by the river and I could hear roaring nearby, so dug open the entrance a bit by hand. I could not be bothered getting my clothes dirty, nor did I think I would fit in my caving gear so I went in there in nothing but my undies and shoes! All that gravel hurts your chest I can tell you. Turns out it was not a new cave, and had been explored a few years earlier. I can't remember the name of the cave sorry.

Not the best photo but as we were walking to the entrance of Manchester Hole yesterday, past some stunning Hawthorne, it was the 'Wildflowers' thread (and the incredible knowledge of some forum members) that we were discussing.

Surely it has to be Alum! The finest cave entrance in the country in my humble opinion!

I think my favourite trip there must have been the one time I’ve seen some properly good sunbeams - in this photo you can see Arun descending into the depths on the far side, which I merged together into one single photo

Blimey, how on earth am I going to choose??!! Some FAB entries already. Thanks so much everyone - please do keep them coming 😁

Three cave entrances for me:
entrance_hirlatz.jpg

This is the main entrance to the Hirlatzhöhle in January for my annual three-nights-camping-to-climb-a-short-way-into-an-aven-because-apparently-I-can't-find-anywhere-to-climb-avens-in-the-UK trip :)
The bit just between us and the ladder into the entrance is a bit avalanche/rockfall prone, so you move quickly across that bit. It's about a 45 minute to an hour slog up a steep rough path up a hillside to get to the entrance from the car park.

entrance_Kirkjan_(Hljóðaklettar).jpg

This is a 'cave' in Iceland (some might argue it's only a 'rock shelter', but it's a pretty big one that goes back probably 10 m?) called Kirkjan (church) in an area of rock formations called Hljóðaklettar (well worth a visit if you are in Iceland, and much quieter than the nearby Dettifoss waterfall). It's not actually karst or even pseudokarst I think but an erosional feature due to the folding in the basalt columns.

entrance_hang_en.jpg

This is looking out the back of Hang En in Vietnam. I don't know exactly how high it is but I'd guess ~100 m.

I haven't deliberately picked non-UK caves - there are UK caves with great entrances, I just don't have any photos of them! I took some photos of Alum Pot sunbeams the other day but that's already been done :)
