• Help us work out the future of the Inglesport Café

We've been trading since 1977 and next year will be our 50th anniversary.

The café has been part of that for a long time, running quietly in the background for years, and we don't think it always gets the credit it deserves as a genuine community hub. But we need to be straight with you: the café is under real pressure, and we’re not sure of the best path forward.....

Meta menardi, the European cave spider, looking out of the gated entrance of Afton Rift, Devon. It is common for M. menardi to weave horizontal orb webs on cave walls to directly catch prey such as woodlice. Unfortunately for this spider, its web had mostly just captured large amounts of bat guano, casting a shadow on the rock behind.

This photo was taken after a sporting biological sampling trip down to the bottom of the cave to collect Niphargus glenniei (cave shrimp) specimens to support the long term study of hypogean crustaceans in the UK. Niphargus glenniei was first observed in 1948 in Pridhamsleigh Cave by Brigadier E.A. Glennie from the Cave Research Group. N. glenniei was described as a new species shortly after in 1952 and named after Glennie to honour his discovery.

Does this count as ‘flora’; on a sunny and snowy January trip to Birks Fell cave we carried a bouquet of roses to the entrance … in addition to silly photos, they provided a frozen treat when we returned to the surface!
