WIN WITH UKC – Tell us your ‘carrying’ tale!

The second of the Inglesport fabulous Five is a Rab Protium 27 backpack - worth £130

https://www.inglesport.com/product/rab-protium-27-backpack-27l/

Loaded with features and impressively comfortable, this streamlined, adaptable, 27L day pack is the multi-tool of backpacks.

When you need one pack for all your day adventures, the Protium offers impressive multi-activity versatility. With a body-contouring back system that flexes as you move, it’s equipped for all-mountain day hikes, scrambles, and pushing the pace on any terrain. Its slick, streamlined appearance and adaptable storage features combine to create a modern do-it-all pack that you’ll take wherever you’re headed.

Fluorocarbon (PFAS) free fabric

Fluorocarbon-free fabric is completely free of fluorocarbons (PFAS), whether that’s in the face fabric, membrane, or backer. PFAS-free means we’ve phased out all intentionally added PFAS and we are compliant with current EU and US legislation.

Obviously (hopefully!) this isn't going to be used underground, however some lucky winner will be glad of it when out hiking, travelling and needing to carry kit.

To enter, simply post your tale/photo about carrying loads underground or to/from caves (both home and abroad). It’s a wide brief, anything to do with getting kit from A to B qualifies! Sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words, hence - photos most welcome!

2 entries per person.

Closing time/date 10pm, Wed 21st May

Shortlist to be chosen by me, then over to random.org.

GOOD LUCK!

(y)(y)Many thanks to Inglesport and Rab for supporting the forum with this fabulous prize!(y)(y)

‘Our story began in 1981 in the attic of a small, terraced house in Sheffield where Rab Carrington made the first sleeping bag to bear his name. Hand-stitched and devised with his own ingenious eye, his designs were crafted with years of mountain experience, and soon there was popular demand both from friends and the growing local climbing (and caving!) community’.

T&Cs - This competition is in collaboration with Rab and Inglesport. Prize cannot be exchanged for cash. Rab & Inglesport reserve the right to change the product prize depending on stock availability. Winners must live in UK.

Our anchor installers are regularly underground across northern regions. In the last four years they have clocked up at least eight completely new anchoring projects (including several newly discovered caves), with others currently on-the-go, several anchor replacement projects, as well as organising a national anchor installers event to share knowledge and experience with other regions.

In terms of carrying kit... well... even just replacing a few defective anchors requires rather a lot of stuff!

Anchoring equipment.jpg

And that doesn't even include the ropes/krabs/slings needed to get to where the new anchors are needed!

Thanks to our installers, but also not forgetting the many assistants who help carry all this stuff, only to get very cold while dutifully waiting for the installer to do their work.

Living in a city and working in the centre, means I have no requirement for a car for anything other than caving, and so don't own one. I keep telling myself I could hire one but so so far I've not found it necessary. It is possible to fit an entire weekends camping and SRT caving kit into one rucksack, and carry it via public transport to a station convenient for someone on the trip to pick me up for the final mile(s). It is harder work than any of the actual caving - especially coming back with Sunday trains, wet and even heavier gear. You have to be selective in what you choose to carry! The luxury of a 2nd dry undersuit doesn't make it. Oversuits need careful folding. Wellies are inconvenient shapes. You hope that the campsite is close to a pub (always!) because there's no space for beer :-O A camera to record such epic feats is also one straw too many.

Many thanks to all the club-mates who have supported my idiosyncrasies this way, met me at stations, packed extra stuff and provided lifts I couldn't go caving without you!

👏🏼 if you win are you going to commit to doing your next few trips just using the 27L bag?

If we are posting full cars, then this is from the Dachstein 2023 which was less full than the Dachstein 2024 (where we had 4 people in the car and had to get the cargo net thing that stops stuff flying over the back seats):
full_car.jpg

But if you want an actual bag photo, then there are disappointing few photos of me carrying a massive bag (despite this being a large fraction of what I end up doing in the Dachstein but here is one with a moderate load:

I've successfully rescued quite a few frogs and toads, but I think the most exciting was when we found four in the Main Drain sump in Ease Gill! They were named Doreen, Arthur, Matilda and Tiny Tim, and all made it safely out of Lancaster Hole! The water bottle that was in my tackle sack before hand was relegated to the inside of my oversuit so as not to crush my new cargo :)
