Great Douk / Sunset / Hardrawkin
« on: January 12, 2012, 10:08:14 pm »
The first trip of the new year is this Sunday and it’s a nice easy start suitable for all.

The intention is to do Great Douk Cave first which is a pleasant stream cave without any pitches but to get out the other end requires a crawl. It can be done in fairly high water conditions but some of the crawling will be in water

After that we will do Sunset Hole which has a single pitch of 15m at the end if the cave into the final chamber, so this doesn’t need to be descended if there are any non SRT members, or it’s ideal for a first SRT trip underground.

We should also be able to do Hardrakwin Pot as well, this includes a couple of sizeable pitches with deviations, but it’s possible to go a little way in before encountering the pitches.

If there are enough people we could split the party to rig both Sunset and Hardrawkin before doing an exchange and de-rigging.

All three of the caves are susceptible to high water, so if the current wet conditions continue we may have to modify some of the trip on the day.

Meeting for breakfast is at Inglesport at 9:15am.

I was up at Great Douk this morning with a group walking, and the ground was very sodden, but the forecast looks good, and Inglebrough house were underground today both at Great Douk and The Churns.

You could suggest that non-SRT people do High Douk Holes, which in effect are the upstream continuation of Hardrawkin, and which are quite fun.

Some pictures and a trip report about Hardrawkin from last night can be found here:

PVC suits with hood and gloves definitely a good idea.

Have a good weekend.

Light-weight non-PVC suit, no gloves and no hood definitely a bad idea. :(

Nice pics. :)
