Just out of interest but does anyone know what became of this cave?

I thought the farmer banned all visits.  He was throwing dead animals down there.

That's what I thought. My interest was piqued as from the very brief description it is a substantial hole. Has anyone on the  forum been down it? If they have it must have been around 40 years ago.

The cave is currently closed - Mendip Underground page 284.

When we visited the farm in 2012 to ask permission he stated "rudeness by previous caving visitors as the reason for closure".

You could try again Chris!

So it is! I should have looked there first. I did look up the UBSS Procs.

It does sound a complete shithole but interestingly the description in the UBBS and Mendip Underground does not tally with Caves of the Bristol Region which says to the north of the rift chamber there is a larger chamber 90m long. Confusion or was the cave extended?

I don't think I'll approach the farmer.

See review of "Caves of the Bristol Region" on p.159 & description of cave on p.160 from 1975:

Thanks Mike, most interesting. That settles the "90m long chamber" then. So Phil Hendy went down! He was in my house a couple of days ago, but he's not on UKcaving. I'll ask him, see what he remembers.

If the farmer stopped chucking carcasses down it may be more salubrious by now but from what axbridgecaver said the farmer is resolute that he won't give access.
