Mrs Susan Johnson of Aillwee Cave, County Clare
« on: February 15, 2008, 04:46:44 pm »
I'm sorry to break the news like this to anyone who knew her, but Susan died
yesterday, at her home in France.  Her husband Roger was with her.

Susan and Roger were the owners and developers of Aillwee Show Cave in County
Clare, and for many years have been good friends to many UBSS members, and
to the Society as a whole. They contributed generously to the production of
the Caves of County Clare and South Galway, and always gave a warm welcome
at the cave to visiting UBSS members and indeed to cavers in general.  We
got to know them during our explorations of the lower reaches of the Cave of
the Wild Horses in the early 1980's, and over the years, Susan provided an
enthusiastic source of local knowledge of the depression and its flooding.
She always told me that she was chuffed to have had an acknowledgement in the
1983 paper in Proceedings, even though she'd never been down the cave.

I will always remember with great fondness the gossips we used to enjoy
whenever we'd pole up in her office at the cave, or at the house, for coffee
and a chat. She was a mine of local information, and great fun.

Susan and Roger retired to their home in France in the last two years, when
Susan's emphesyma worsened. Our thoughts are with Roger and their sons,
Nicky, Ben and Adam and their families.
