The science of caving and the sport of caving have long been inter-linked. It's not long before the most dedicated sports caver starts wondering and then learning how the cave environment was formed. An amateur geologist is born. Nor can the scientist study caves without using sporting techniques to visit. Surely caving is the most sporting of sciences and scientific of sports.
The scientific study of caves is called Speleology. Even in this modern age so little is known about the subterranean environment that the amateur scientist can still make a unique and valuable contribution.
