How many

The CoPD index compiled by Tim Webber lists 640 caves entrances in the 2010 edition.  This is mainly caves, although it does include mines which are popular with cavers: e.g. Hillocks, Knotlow, Water Icicle, Oxlow, Maskhill, etc.  (Note also that there are some systems with more than one entrance, e.g. Peak/Speedwell.)  A good many of the natural cave passages in the White Peak have been found by mines which intersected with them by accident, JH is a prime example.

However, there are lots of mines which are not listed which have more recently become of interest to cavers, such as Silvereye Mine, Longcliffe, etc.

There are also literally hundreds of mines known to exist but which are not listed in CoPD, although not all of these may now be accessible.

I'd suggest that there may be 800 or so in all caves, mine/cave complexes and mines of interest to cavers.  I'd be interested to hear any other estimates.
