    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

    Good smoke for testing drafts?

Thank you everyone for the mix of useful and entertaining solutions. The best answers seems to be a mix of both. I am still considering the balloon-in-the-passage idea especially as we get towards paddling pool season

    Good smoke for testing drafts?

Hi, we're trying to test a number of drafts swirling I'm and out of our digs. I bought some plumbers flue testing ones from Amazon but they say "do not inhale" in big letters. Anyone recommend something they've used that is safe for human consumption - or should I just give up on this idea...

    Take care in Odin Mine.

Oops messed up my last post. You say you're insulted, angry and patronised but I'm afraid your ego wounds come from you alone. You've made an argument from (weak) authority, followed by justifying your use of a unlikely hypothetical, before saying that I'm the one that needs to provide some...

    Take care in Odin Mine.

I wish people would stop scaremongering with these sorts of fantastical scenarios. Not only is this paragraph at best outdated (children have been found volenti non fit) landowners have occupiers liability insurance for exactly this reason. The National Trust has a very large and well funded...

    Mine shaft storage on news

Most university finance people don't really know what a university does or how they work to be fair. Vast majority of that will have been spend on buildings and salaries - 80% of my grant did. A significant proportion was skimmed off the top by vastly over payed and over inflated admin budgets...

    Caving Memes

Anyone who heard senior CDG use racist terms for black people at the AGM and did nothing is either a racist or a coward. Which one are you? As a side note, vaguely amused that you censored the F word but not 😂

    Caving Memes

When I was in BCA I had quite a bit of contact with the Spanish federation on how they did it - turns out the instructors/guides volunteer to do it for free. Fancy it? Anyway sorry I'm late with my meme

    Suspension Trauma

I have a suspicion that (and it's not really related to the thread I guess) we spend more time practising the cure than the prevention, because practising ropework is more fun than talking about group management or appropriate training etc. As far as I see it if you need to croll to croll...

If we're digging in sandy, gypsum heavy digs should we realistically be wearing masks? If so anyone know what kind please

Beginner’s Guide to Caving: Explore the Underground World

1000 hours if you go in the mean Yorkshire Dales cave! I think that section was more to reassure people that's it's something to be aware of but not a massive issue (unless you're working underground or seriously digging)

The Origin of Cave Draughts - Question

Our dig is quite deep in the cave and has cold air rising into it from a 45 degree slope (we can't quite get into yet). Does this mean we are at the top of the chimney? I tried reading the pdf up above but my french is rusty and the document wasn't a breeze

    Carlsberg don't make crowbars

Ayup, I need a new crowbar for digging. I did a forum search and there's no advice. There seems to be a dizzying array of shapes. We need one shorter than the length of a forearm. Should we get a titanium one? What about these fancy pry/destruction bars that look like something for the zombie...
