    BCA finances

It is worth bearing mind that even having gone incorporated, that does not stop the claimant suing the rich members in the club, if they can demonstrate some form of link between the event and that member. It happened to one caving club long ago though fortunately (if that is the correct term?)...

    BCA finances

I think this arose from the following alert I picked up. My wife received a message through her membership of the English Folk Dance and Song Society which gave her a link to a Morris Men organisation . Simply put, it seems that the regulations made in 2017 require clubs to register their...

    BCA pros and cons

Regarding insurance, please read the attached. It came from the BCA web site in 2007 and was a major driver in our work to set up BCA. I will also repeat that we decide back then that the effort to present BCA as a seller of insurance (which is the only way to make insurance optional) was beyond...

    BCA pros and cons

Sorry but mines are specifically covered by the Mines & Quarries Act 1954 which requires the entrances to abandoned mines to be secured so as to "prevent any person from accidentally falling down the shaft or from accidentally entering the outlet". Apart from the argument over whether a mine is...

    BCA pros and cons

The prospectus was issued around March 2003 prior to BCRA being informed in September 2003 that they would not be offered another insurance policy as a consequence of the 9/11 terrorist action in New York in 2001. I don't recall Foot & Mouth being cited as part of the reason for the loss; just a...

Concrete screws - smaller stainless screws tested

Neat piece of work. I should add that the standards are quite unclear about the number of tests one needs to do and thus the value for strength that one deduces from such work. So frankly, a single result means little. (Especially as we found some anchors had metallurgical defects which...

    Help with an unusual compass

Do remember after next Saturday to correct for BST if you use 12 noon to postion north by the sun. Though of course being a bit westward of Prime Meridian you will need to either take account of the minutes and seconds, or work out what it is from the compass.

    First Aid Kits

Try Cohesive Bandage Wrap around a £1 a roll in Poundland I believe. Should add a sterile dressing for wounds if above ground.

    Cave Rescue Procedures (continued)

You miss the point of insurance for team members. Yes it covers injury or death whilst on the rescue. Given they deliberately go out when a normal party would cancell, the risk is much higher and would not be covered by an ordinary policy.

    Cave Rescue Procedures

I may be not up to date, but the problem of failing to get quickly through to police and then cave rescue has occurred in the past. That is why the advice on the initial 999 call out is "In an emergency if you need the assistance of a UK cave rescue team you should dial 999 and ask for the...

    Suspension Trauma

In a scan of the past 20 plus years of BCRC records there were some 16 incidents who causes included "hung up".

    Suspension Trauma

The BCA anchors are each good for way above 20kN. It is more likely the rope will break than an anchor fail. Lyon's work for the HSE indicated peak forces by a person moving abruptly might reach a factor of two of body mass, say 2kN. There would need to be a fall onto slack rope to get forces...
