    Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football March 4th & 5th 2025 "Turnup" 2pm

And once again I’ll be there……beer currently racked up and ready to be dropped bright for delivery tomorrow. Cracking weather forecast too, for a change.

What caving related thing did you do today?

I know what you mean, but it’s not a quote you’ll see on Rightmove.

Jug Holes lower none surveyed section

Anything in the Op Mole records? That’s the first place I’d check.

    Belay belts

I hope you aren’t sad about PPE. Too many trips to hospital, or the undertakers for some. I’ll be at a funeral in 10 days of a guy who had mesothelioma, which will be sad but not amusing. When elimination or engineering controls aren’t adequate, PPE can be a literal lifesaver.

Working at height on Salisbury Cathedral

Just got round to watching the painting one. Shocked by the lack of safety provision, given the (relatively) recent date. Just awful. But did like the heel method for opening paint tins and will try that when we redecorate the lounge.

How are you getting on with the replacement skull? Bet you had to go private….. 😳

Working at height on Salisbury Cathedral

I’m having to close my eyes reading these accounts. Got that horrible feeling in my legs reading Mark’s piece on Emley Moor mast. Hoping it’s just armchair vertigo and not a sign that I need Matron to change me. There’s a lot to be said for a nice horizontal adit.

History of Matlock mines, caves - book progress update

I’m sure I’m not the only one here who cut their teeth in Matlock Bath having read your earlier book(s) on Masson. The new Magnum Opus is indeed eagerly awaited, and I’m sure will give us the nudge to (discretely of course, and with the necessary permissions) put spades to ground again.

another reason to not get into diving

Presumably one would then need to swallow a bird, cat, dog, and cow, refusing to swallow a horse, of course, in order to avoid the consequences thereof.

What's the horniest caving hut in the UK?

For a sport that seeks to be inclusive (we do, don’t we?), my heart sinks when I see this sort of post. It creates an atmosphere (or could) whereby potential participants can feel they are entering an environment where they are likely to be viewed as ‘fresh meat’, to borrow a reference from TV...

History of caving in the Dales

Seconded. There are some gems hidden there (no pun intended). Quite a few mining photos from Derbyshire. Plenty more to see; suspect this will keep me occupied for a while.

    Memories of student trips

Forty seven years ago I was shivering in P8 during a Derby College of Art and Technology Caving Club trip. Shivering because my cotton boiler suit was soaked, despite wearing a cagoule 😂. I don’t think I’ve ever been as cold; fortunately one of the leaders spotted my descent into hypothermia and...

    Titan from the top down

"I have been with Michaela Strachan, but not in that sense". What a joyous film. Thanks for posting so it can be enjoyed again. The dry wit of all involved was a delight; reserve and determination at its best.

    Caving and piercing

Reading through the link, I nearly choked on my sweet potato fries* when I got to “re-routing their genitals”. This is a thing?? *don’t judge me. We’ve had the granddaughters for the day and needed comfort food.

    Good news for film fans

You’ll be pleased to know that at least one person spotted the pun. F or X?
