    Lost Johns rigging

Quite a few people have asked me about this both on UKC and in person, so I wanted to make a dedicated thread to avoid any potentially hazardous confusion. As mentioned in another thread, my ropes are currently on Lost Johns centipede route all the way to the master cave. Apologies for leaving...

    Online caving logs

Hi all, I've always had a caving trip log on my website which I used to update manually from a spreadsheet, which was quite cumbersome. In answer to this, I've spent the last month or so developing a website which streamlines and automates this process. I've finally got a workable version, and...

Digitisation of information contained in old books

Hello all, I don't want to step on any toes here and this is purely a thought exercise for now. Some old guidebooks that have not yet been superceded, such as Northern Caves 1, are incredibly useful but have now been out of print for a number of years. Obviously it's not difficult to obtain a...

Thames Water and Severn Trent Water use dowsing to detect leaks

I was surprised to read in The Times today that water companies have been using dowsing to find leaks, or at least some of their engineers seem to think that is what they are doing. I thought it was only cavers that subscribed to this 'interesting' technique... I've quoted the article below as...

    My night in Langcliffe Pot

I've written this trip report up of a visit to Langcliffe. I'll warn you proper 'ard cavers - it was my first time down there and I didn't make it past Boireau Falls Chamber, so there's nothing "new" in here. Nonetheless, I treated the report as a writing exercise - I've tried to give a 'feel'...

A first time down Ireby Fell

Ireby Fell Cavern is a classic Yorkshire caving trip that neither Gracie nor I had managed to do yet, so on 17th of June we set off to rectify that. We were enticed by the promise of spectacular sandy passage in Duke St, as well as what was reputed to be a fun bit of SRT to get there. The CNCC...

    Diamond Hall - Ease Gill

Does anyone know why the entrance to Diamond Hall in Ease Gill is taped off with conservation tape? Is there another way in here other than the climb up which the tape is “protecting”? It seems odd for a fairly sizeable section of a cave to be taped off, unless I am missing something.

    Knock Fell Caverns - 19th February 2022

Hi all, Gracie and I took a trip down Knock Fell Caverns last weekend and while it's not a particularly noteworthy trip, I did notice that Knock Fell is one of those caves where there is a bit of a vacuum of information regarding it online. I've decided to publish a trip report on my website...

Introductory geology books (potentially with a caving focus)?

I think it's inevitable that any caver will start to show an interest in geology eventually, which is what has now happened to me. I don't know the first thing about it but I'm keen to learn. Is anyone able to recommend any beginner level geology books which give a basic overview of the field...
