A place to park in/near Preston?

I'm arranging a lift share to the fantastic lead mines of Nenthead, preston seems to be a good converging point for people meeting from Greater Manchester and the Satellite cities of Birmingham. A longshot, but has anyone parked in Preston before, or know the nearby places well enough to suggest anything?

Don't do it! Preston is a traffic-bound nightmare to be avoided unless absolutely necessary. I'd suggest stopping at Tebay Services which one of the better services. I've heard that the grub is very good though haven't tried it myself as it's too near my home. Then it's Nenthead via Penrith and the A686 - a fine drive.

Agree with the above - Preston was the first city to have a motorway bypass built, presumably because everyone wanted to avoid it. If you don't want to heed this advice and indeed want to stick with P town, the Spar/Shell/subway combo on Bluebell way provides opportunity for motorway on/offing

Park and ride area at J34 Lancaster. Smaller than usual due to the covid test centre using part of it. Floodlit and never had any trouble. Free.

Don't leave your car at the services though if you are car sharing - most of them charge after 3 hours.

That is amazing! Thanks Steve, think I might give Preston a miss this time, I have been picked up from the train station there before, Which was fairly painless.

Al, you can leave your car at my place in Ingleton if you want. Only a small detour from Lanky P&R and very safe.

All motorway services charge for parking cars more than 2 or 3 hours.  The last time I looked it was ?75 for 12 hours!  And many other car parks do likewise.  I have left my car for a long day on Shevington Moor in a residential area close to J27 in the north east quadrant of the M6 / A5209.  Use Bing maps and aerial view to find a convenient street.  But you may wish to transfer gear elsewhere so as to not be so obvious about what you are doing.

Thanks Swallowneck, I think we'll go with the Park and Ride. I was going to say we'll need to hurry to make last orders at the Miners Arms, Nenthead but that appears to be shut, as does the George and Dragon in Garrigill!

Whats the word on the Street? are there any pubs we need to support to keep open up there? or are we too late to save them?

The real local pubs are all shut down around Nenthead. There is the Hive in Nent which is open some evenings if they have a quiz night of something. But if your after going out it will be Alston or Nenthall, but bare in mind Nenthall might be a bit desolate - tends to have guests if they are hoteling. Locals don't realy go there.

I'm really gutted about Miners Arms and George and Dragon being shut over the last +2 years.

Recommend the Cumberland in Alston.
