First trip out with Dunc from Black Rose.
I think I impressed Dunc with my capuchin stopper knot but not sure he was impressed with my supreme level of fitness when I collapsed in a heap after hiking up the fellside!
The decision was made that I would rig the pitch with instruction and supervision.
I managed to rig the pitch head, demonstrating my knot tying skills, and descended down a few metres to swing onto the ledge to do the lateral cleft route. Unfortunately my attempts at gettting to the ledge were a complete waste of time and I had to admit defeat and go back up so Dunc could come down and rig to the ledge. Of course, he did it with no problem whatsoever.
We proceeded down with Dunc now doing the rigging and me wondering how the hell I was ever going to prusik back up these narrow pitches.
I offered to de-rig on the way back up so Dunc set off up making the narrow pitches look very easy. I, of course, managed to turn them into the hardest thing I had ever done!
I think the crowning moment was when I de-rigged from the final ledge and swung out into the void crashing into the opposite wall with such force that Dunc heard it at the surface. I think he nearly fell back down the shaft laughing!
Needless to say I now have a stunning bruise on my hip!
It was a great trip and another one to add to my logbook but I fear that Dunc may now be in therapy for a while after caving with me!

Good for you getting stuck in! The commitment required to zoom across the Jingling shaft at 45 metres per second and slam into the wall is to be applauded. Caving can be a bit like climbing in that sense. You learn some of your best lessons just before hitting rock really really hard.

thanks for your reply jb.
not sure if it was commitment or sheer stupidity though.
lesson learnt:- let someone else de-rig!
haha only joking.
maybe i should have stuck my arm out but i guess a bruised hip is better than a broken arm! my layer of fat protected me somewhat!

What, me, laughing at other peoples misfortune? Surely not

JB - Magnificent avatar!!!

Frog - Keep it up... I still let other folks rig if I don't have to. I once soloed Jingling... but just dropped down the direct route. Did you go all the way down the the digs that "should" connect to Aquamole??

didnt go all the way to the digs cos i dumped the bag with the 9mm rope in that dunc was gonna use for the last bit.
didnt actually remember the rope was in it when i dumped it.
never mind. next time we can go down the main shaft and then explore the bottom and maybe have time to do jingling cave which we didnt manage to do this time as we ran out of time with me farting around so much!
