VALE Mike Jeanmaire ("Fish")

Sadly Fish left this world last week after a long fight against lung problems apparently caused by industrial diesel fumes.

Fish was a very active Mendip caver, digger and diver in the late 60's and 70's.
He was the first person to free dive sumps 2 and 3 into Swildons 4, a feat generally thought to be impossible at the time.
He later moved from Mendip to Derbyshire and  took part in a number of foreign expeditions.
Fish also served as chairman of CDG.

I recall his enthusiasm for his dig in Swildons 7 which was a much harder undertaking when the 40 existed and we had to dive every sump. That dig has recently been shown to be linked to "Jenga" another active dig in 7 and still shows promise.

Our condolences to his wife Liz, who has looked after him through his long illness.

Fish's funeral has been arranged for 13:30 on Friday 19th November at the upper chapel at Haycombe Cemetery, Whiteway Road, Bath BA2 2RQ followed by a cremation at the lower chapel at 14:30 all are welcome.

Very sad indeed; fish was a real character for sure. There'll be many of us old codgers who remember him fondly and I offer my deepest sympathies to his family.

Fish was at the helm of the CDG for many years.

He was a rock - and we have huge amounts to be grateful for.

A very sad loss Fish was a  fine chap.  My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Liz.

I can't make the funeral but will raise a glass in his memory at the Red Lion Litton on Friday if anyone would like to do the same please join me.

We are fortunate to have three recordings of Fish on the BCA Audio Archives, which were made a year ago:

Mike Jeanmaire - Free diving in Swildon's Hole: http://caving-library.org.uk/audio/selected.php?id=101
Mike Jeanmaire - The Independent Cave Diving Group: http://caving-library.org.uk/audio/selected.php?id=102
Mike Jeanmaire - Changes in cave diving and the risks Involved: http://caving-library.org.uk/audio/selected.php?id=103

The quality isn't very good because Sid being Sid, had a faulty microphone lead, and Fish's breathing was assisted, but they are well worth listening to.
