Bimbling about on Bradda Moor yesterday for some galena for't carols in't George last night I came across a shaft I'd didn't recognise - so I chucked a small pebble down to discover how deep.
I couldn't hear a noise so I thought hmmmm.... must be deepish so I chucked a bigger rock down and still no echo. I kept chucking even bigger rocks down and still no response so , in the end , I chucked an old fence post down.
Then a really strange thing happened - a huge Bighorn ram racing towards me with its head down in the charge position. Its horns looked huge in the watery afternoon light and I was really spooked. Anyway I did a nifty welsh flyhalf type sidestep and the charging tup went straight past me and on down the shaft!
A few minutes later a farmer appeared over the brow scratching his head.
"'Ast tha seen a big tup? I can't find 'im but 'e 'can't 'a gone far - 'e's tied up to an old gate post"
