Fake Petzl Gear rumour?

First I've heard of it, but it doesn't surprise me that China is still up to it's old tricks and it is surprising that it has taken this long for fakes to be either found or produced. Fake Petzl lights have been available for ages, only a matter of time before other gear was copied!

I'm a bit suspicious of the number of grammatical mistakes in the first part of the message. Lots of stray 's's around.

yeah, my anti-pishing tool says that's a very new site and a bit doubtful.

Handle with care.

On our cavechat thread for it so far no info has been found out other than that one site...Petzl isn't even saying anything about it so...it seems the consensous so far on cavechat is it's totally uncorroborated and who knows if it's even real and so far the leaning is towards it's not true it seems due to lack of any source of info on it other than that site, basically.

Well the announcement says an announcement will appear on Petzle's site so I guess we just play the waiting game, to see if it appears

Bad grammar may be because the e-mail and  the info and post came from China? Or maybe the poster was French.

We have recently discovered in China illegal copies of our followings products:

It is always the spelling and grammar with you Kay, lol.

Could it be a kind of clever viral marketing ad thing.

how many hits has Alpitec website had in the last 12 hours. I certainly googled it.

I was using one the other day and it's not the same but that doesn't mean it's not just a different version.

However, apparently more info on the nss forum says IMO (erm, Inner Mountain Outfitters, a reputable cavegear company here) says that it is true, NZCaver spoke with another company here who also says it is true, and now Petzl's site now says it is preparing an official statement for release on Monday. So I guess sit and wait and see...

You can rest assured that the established suppliers of caving gear - that would be us at caveclimb.com, Inglesport, Caving Supplies, and the other familiar names, only deal with Lyon, the UK importer of Petzl.  You will always find obscure companies online selling Petzl cheaper, but this is good reason to treat them with considerable suspicion.

Tis quite shocking, but then they have been faking aircraft parts for years....  I wonder if any other outdoor gear brands are affected. If not  Isuspect they soon will be...

I'm pretty sure that a Chinese factory that churns out genuine Palm (Canoe/Kayak) kit is also selling identical items rebranded. You can see some on eBay, look exactly like UK store items but are labelled differently.

Is this dodgy gear likely to be cheaper???
More than likely yes, fake/copied shit is more often than not sold cheaper to try and tempt people to grab a "bargain" from the dodgy sellers, if they sold it at same price as the genuine gear it wouldn't attract as many people.

Anyway, as said above, buy from a reputable dealer and no worries!

Yes, as the old adage goes: "If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't..."

As Andy says, stick to reputable suppliers abd you should be OK.
