Ditzys craft blog where she has posted some pics of Daniel the caving Spaniel after he had been attacked but before the vet treated him. A bit gorey so not for the faint hearted.
Going to fetch him home from the very expensive vet in a few minutes
:( >:(

Ditzy, Brains and Dan - I dont know what to say, this is awful. Hope Dan makes a full recovery and the bastard is caught.
Burt

Just a thought - Maybe poor Dan is a hero as well as a victim in this - what if he was trying to protect you from someone burgling your house and sneaking around in your garden?

cant say for definite but think you might be right Burt. for one why would someone even be in our garden and for no 2 why would they have a knife on them! i used to leave the back door open when in until i went to bed so the dogs could go freely in the garden but not anymore, door is locked and they can only go out if I'm out there keeping an eye on them.

it makes me feel sick to see what they have done to the poor dog, Dan would never hurt a fly poor dog alerted me by yelping but by the time i got out there whoever attached him had gone.

Dan is now back from the vets and is recovering at home, he has his ear bandaged to his head for a few days whilst the stitches start to work as well as his back leg in a bandage to protect the stitches in his foot. he also has a small bandage on is front leg from were the saline drip was put it.

he has been given a coarse of anti biotics and some pain killers and need to go back to the vet sunday for a check up.

What complete b*****ds. Hope doggie got a few good bites in first.
Hi Ditzy & Brian , we know spaniels don't do that stuff, Eh?  So vexed at  tw**s if you do find out anything please moderate 'info' to avoid repercussions.
How much did the vet charge? Insured? I'll chip in if not, not much, but all welcome Eh?sure a few more will join me!!!
Ric' ( Owd Git.)

Spaniels are soft mouthed, and usually low noise by breed so don't guard / attack.
a cowardly remonstration would be my guess, B'st**d.Anyone else gonna throw the price of a beer or two in the pot. (if insurance is not up to renumeration.)
A dog loving (Not that way! >:( ) Owd Git.

Please don't misunderstand me, I was only thinking along the same lines as Burt - that he was trying to defend, which is why the b*****d attacked him
Likewise I also wanted to offer to help with vet bills - every little helps. Let us know how we can Brains.

That was my first thought too. The pattern of cuts look a bit odd for someone with a knife to inflict, although I confess part of me doesn't want to believe a human could be so bloody cruel.

Mind you, I would expect the vet to be able to identify a badger or fox attack.

Unlikely to be fox - they're way too timid. Badger wouldn't hesitate if threatened or protecting young from friendly, inquisitive springer (not blessed with the most brains (pun not intended!).

I've seen wounds like that before - on another badger oddly enough. Local badger boffins said that's what they do when ejecting an ill/infirm/elderly badger from a sett - just to get the point across.

Didn't really think about this aspect of it yesterday, as I didn't want to dwell on the photos. Now I have done & I think I agree with Hughie.

The slashes across his muzzle are just about parallel and I seriously doubt that someone with a knife would have managed that. It's far more likely to have been four sharp objects held on the same base, that is four claws. I also agree that badger is far more likely than fox.

Written by Brains on Ditzys a/c because I am very tired and distracted, and hadn't noticed. Perhaps a mod can move it around?

The wounds are clean cut, surgical in appearance and the vet says caused by a sharp edged object, like a knife or piece of steel canister. If a single wound a knife would be the obvious cause but with several sub parralell ones it seems more problematic as you say. The detail is not consistent with teeth, claws, screws or nails etc.
With the gate being opened from the inside and the clean cut nature of the wounds I have no doubt in my mind it was a blade of some kind caused by persons unknown in pursuit of criminal activity
Dan is a mute dog and never barks or howls, but does whimper and growl a little. He is soft mouthed and was very affectionate, craving fuss at most times.
He is on medication and recovering but is still very wary and cautious

Brains/Ditzy - would you mind if i print off the pics? We've got a routine vet visit on monday with a senior vet who may have seen this before. Another opinion may be useful - if your dawg has been in contact with old brock it may be worth getting him Tb tested.

Badger claws are very sharp indeed. Also access (unless walled) wouldn't present much difficulty.

Apologies if any of the above is insulting your intelligence - it's certainly not intended.

Hope Dan makes a rapid recovery.

Hughie, go for it - if you have a problem getting them then send me or Kim an email by pm and we can send you the pics direct.
Thanks
B
