Placing P38 longlife bolts

A few of us over here in Clare have been debating the placing of petzl / raumer P38 type bolts. According to petzl literature the pin should not protrude at all after it has been hammered in. The usual result we get is about 3 or 4 mm of the pin still protruding. Is this safe / acceptable??

We (CNCC Technical Group) have tested the P38 quite extensively, and installed correctly, is a really good anchor and difficult to remove. You have to hammer the pin home until the head (of the pin) starts to peen over (like a rivet). At that point it may not be flush with the plate, but at least it's been hammered in as far as it will go. The danger of not hammering the pin all the way in is that, as the plate flexes over time in use, it can loosen or release the pin to such an extent that the anchor can become loose enough to be removed by hand.

hi - i have never used one , BUT looking at the design IMHO  only a insufficently deep hole - OR a hole clogged with dust / debris - OR a hanger clogger with debris / damaged

would prevent the pin being hammered flush - as petzl reccomend

i have no idea what - if any pin protrussion is safe
