Dun Cave Gating

I no longer collect cave gates as it is becoming too hazardous.  Every time I put a duplicate on Ebay the police come around to feel my collar.  Of course I do not keep my collection of cave gates in my back yard, instead I keep them at my allotment.  They make an excellent sheep prove fence.

I now collect Speleothems.  Here are a couple of stalagmites which I have just added to my collection:

They are:

1 13? long 3 ? in diameter
2 16? long and 2?? in diameter

Any ides how old they are?

Would have included a picture, but cannot resize it.

Don't anybody fall for this.

I have inside intelligence that he has just done a deal with a waste paper company to take his death threat letters.

Keeping to the topic - where is Dun Cave?  Is it in Ireland?  And why should it be gated?

Gated a bit too late I would say, all the stals have been already taken.

Oh sorry, I believe it might be on Dun Fell by the name, which is north Pennines.

Finally managed to get the photo on ukCaving.

Now given the dimensions, what is the age of these stalagmites?

club hammer or Club hammer, and if the latter, is there a hammer officer?

Polish a section and count the rings - assume they are annual, there you go,
or, fork out for a radionucleide date.
If from a a suitable place could be only a few years / months.
Size is no indicator...

The rate of growth is dependant on various external and environmental conditions none of which can be determined from a photo.

If it is the actual age that they were growing/started/ended, etc then as Brains said, a radionucleide test will give you absolute ages, if it is how long they were growing for then counting the rings, assuming they are annular, will give you their overal age from when they started growing until when they finished.

Frowned on. Now usually regarded as executive percussion officer.

Trouble with counting growth rings, it means I would have to cut the stalagmite in two and that wold be vandalism.

Try the religous dating options:
a) make it up
b) have a guess
c) find a book that tells you
d) charge people to hear your interpretation of its age
e) burn anyone that disagrees
f) make all problems the fault of a woman or a minority and persecute
g)ask a friend - might be a while to get a reply unless you use point a

Last time I was in Gough's Cave, Capt Chris said "That they take 1000 years to grow a cubic inch".
Take a look (if you were allowed to) at the road sign in Lamb Leer. That's almost disappeared (ten years ago).
