The Scurion?

Hello all,
I know a lot of you use a Scurion and had a quick question for you. How far down are you able to point the scurion? For example could you light up your feet? I ask becasue I am debating the Sten and the Scurion. And one thing I fancy about the Sten is that it can point straight up or down. While this isnt a make or break thing for me, I was just curious since the Scurion is a little bigger than the Sten. I currently use an Ecrin Roc helmet, and would probably be going for the blade mount option on the Scurion so it would stick out a little farther than the regular mount. So that should help then Scurion in being pointed down a little bit more.
Thanks!

The Scurrion main beam should point forward where you are going, the "spread" beam illuminates pretty much 1800 all around and provides illumination from your feet to the roof and all the way left and right in your periferal vision.

If you angle it downwards to the maximum extent then the main beam still points forward some what, but there is plenty of light from the spread. If you look down at your feet then obviously the main beam will point there too.

It seems to work very well

i dont own a scurion but have used one on a number of occations. I also use an ecrin roc so know  first hand about how these go together. basically it works, but only just! If you make sure you drill the attachment holes as low as possible, but making sure the bracket does not sit on the rim, then you can just about point the light down as much as you want.
Perfect design, while cutting it a bit fine...

I generally find that the only time I move my Scurion is to actually point it further UP (!!!) when crawling!  ::)

Moving your head to look at things is so pass?, let alone changing the lamp angle. With the wide angle of the flood in the Scurion you can just move your eyes...  ;)

Indeed.
For me, it's been that way since I made my first flood/spot LED lights in spring 2004.
And, I suppose, for all the time before that when I used carbide....

I have used both Stenlight (for a couple of years) and Scurion (since succumbing and buying on at Speleo Vercors in August).

I have used both with a normal "clip" to use the usual bracket on caving helmet (an old Petzl Best - like the Ecrin Rock without the ventilation holes). Both lights can be angled up and down. I thought this a really useful feature with the Stenlight but because the Scurion has such a wide wide-beam, and bright, I find there's no need to move the Scurion at all. I notice that the newer Scurions have shorter cooling fins at the lower front presumably to provide more clearance when angling down. I have mine point downwards a fair bit so that when using the spot, the angle is approximately straight ahead with respect to my normal field of vision. Another thing is the Scurion's screws loosen much easier than the Stenlights if you do move them up and down often - but that can probably be fixed with plastic washers on the Scurion. One other point to consider, the Stenlight is MUCH lighter in weight.

Have just started using a Scurion, mounted on an Ecrin Roc Helmet. Whilst i find the light output fantastic (like caving in daylight).
The only downside i have at the moment is that the control knob is too big, as i find when in tight passages/crawls any head movement can cause the knob to catch on the rock thus turning the light off.
Any thoughts on this ????
cheers

Yes......

What a nuisance...  :tease:

Welcome to the forum, by the way!

Yes, that happens occasionally to me, although I am usually using the middle one of my modes so it just flicks to a different mode if I knock the button. It happened more when I first got the light though, I think I've got used to the dimensions now.

I do wish that you could lock the light on though, in the same way that you can lock the light off for travel. However, the command to lock the unit for travel is a sustained turn of the knob while off, and this is used to enter programming mode when the light is on, I guess there's no simple way of implementing this function as there are no simple actions left. I wouldn't have minded programming mode being accessed in the same way as configuration mode though as I don't use it while inside a cave. (For non-owners out there, programming mode lets you alter the brightness modes, configuration mode lets you alter the number of brightness modes, disable programming mode and disable the battery indicator, and is accessed by connecting the battery to the light while holding the knob in one direction).

Actually, I wonder how many and what modes other people have programmed onto their Scurions. Mine are set as:

1) Flood 1, Spot 0
2) Flood 4, Spot 0
3) Flood 3, Spot 0
4) Flood 0, Spot 4
5) Flood 4, Spot 4

(Power levels range from 0 to 4)

1 is for waiting around, 2 is for general caving, 3 is for general caving when I'm doing a long weekend (and it's also a big warmer (less blue) and subjectively is only slightly less bright than on full power - lasts 3 times longer though), 4 is for looking up avens and 5 is for looking at big stuff.

Perhaps a software fix may be possible so that you need to hold the knob for a second or two to change modes. This would stop the odd knock from changing levels whilst in use.

Thanks for the welcome Menacer...
Did think of stripping light to get knob out, so it could be turned down to a smaller size. Not sure about warranty etc, probably void it  :(

Say Hi to Bean and the guys

I suggested this to Rolf a while since and he initially made some positive noises but it all seems to have gone quiet and he was so grumpy at Hidden Earth I didn't feel like asking!!

As a side note: i often flip my lamp so it points down while talking to fellow cavers so it doesn't blind them, or when someone is taking fotos so it doesnt shine straight into the lense. this saves dimming down then up again when you move on. is this possible with the scurion?

I have set my scurion to use the max of 10 settings.
If you make a few settings identical, this helps in crawls when you knock the switch forwards or backwards.

Its not ideal, but a short quick fix

Mine has just arrived this morning, many thanks to caveclimb for the uber pronto post, it got here at 7:10am!

Anyway, I'm off to put it on the mantle so it won't get scratched. BTW does anybody know where I can get hold of the scurion connectors or indeed what they are? I want to put the right plug on my home build Duo/P4 so I can use it with the Scurion battery.
Pete

Naturally you'll know this but, just make damn sure that you don't cock up and let the battery short circuit!
Naturally you'll know this but, if you do cock up the protection circuit built into the battery will prevent any "danger".
