Hi,

I am looking for a cave in Yorkshire/Derbyshire with the following requirments:

  • Grade 3/4
  • About 4 - 5 hour trip
  • 2/3 Pitches
  • A bit of everything
  • Some nice formations/sections

Anything come to mind?

Thanks

Daz

Ireby Fell Caverns? - best cave in the country, and possibly soon to be the longest!

George.

Swinsto to Valley entrance pull-through trip

Complete quality, lots of pitches but all (except one) abseils only

Pop in the bottom first and rig the master cave pitch with a ladder or check there is a rope first though...

Ireby fell is good as stated already, or Tatham Wife

I second the above recommendations for the Dales.

In the Peak you could try a trip down to the East Canal and back in Giants Hole.

  • Bar Pot (or Flood Entrance) to Gaping Gill Main Chamber and the round trip via Hensler's Master Cave
  • Magnetometer Pot to Caton Hall, or a bit further to The Whale
  • Lancaster Hole to the Main Drain via Wilf Taylor's, and back by Waterfall Passage - good for a first trip into Easegill
  • Gingling Hole to Fools Paradise?

I would suggest going down Waterfall Passage and back up Wilf Taylor's.

Or Swinsto, Simpsons (both pull through and exit via Valley Entrance - or rig them and go back up!), or anything mentioned above.

Dow Cave
Heron Pot
Darnbrook Pot
(all should be less than 4/5 hours but depends how much you want to admire the scenery)
and any of the others already mentioned.

Hi,

Thanks for all recomendations, we decided to turn it into a rigging and pull through practice and did Heron Cave followed by a through trip and clean up in Yordas (our clubs Descent adopted cave  )

Shame you didn't go for Ireby, as George said it is the finest trip in the Dales although I believe it could be a little bit Rifty  ;) Jenny :alien:

I will probbably be taking Daz down Irbey this weekend, does anyone know if Bubbles or the other routes are still rigged, ie someone who has been down recently?

Don't know about recently but of the three 'usual' routes in the entrance series Bubbles was the only one that was left rigged (probably because it was the driest, but with the dam giving up the ghost there is a chance they may have chosen to remove the ropes rather than letting water batter them? or maybe not ). Anyway I've emailed you regarding the above.

I would also go with George's reccommendation - Ireby round or better still Ireby II in and out via Cripple Creek.

Not sure I agree with Jenny, I don't think you will find it too 'Rifty', I haven't...  ;)

Hmmm, longest - sounds interesting, do tell more!

I would also go with George's reccommendation - Ireby round or better still Ireby II in and out via Cripple Creek.
In and out via Cripple Creek would be a fine, if a little more challenging, option. Doing the round and using Skylight as an exit makes for a very good, but easier trip.

As for Jenny saying it's "rifty", again I don't agree - I find it (doing the round) generally easy going and very "varied" with a bit of everything in the trip.

Why put this in? Its an old quote and I have done about 15 caves since then?

If you have nothing useful to add go away! :furious:

Aye I posted that then I thought I best just check my e-mail hehe.

Well I think I still need to drum up some interest in our club to at least get the ropes we need.
