Hey folks, i have recently got hold of a petzl duo (duel halogens) and an oldham head set. As i haven't modified any lights before, can anyone recommend any drivers, LED, optic combinations (for either headset with the petzl battery box running off 4xAA NiMH)?

Cheers Can

Hey Canary, plenty of good info in this section of the forum. Look at the 'Cree in a Duo' thread and other variously titled light thread mods. I've converted a Duo halogen to run off a SSC P4 with a bFlex driver, worked so well a mate bought it from me to replace his standard one.
One word of warning, you'll find the switch a pain in the ass to mod on a Duo.

Just a single P4 LED on an ally plate. No heat problems, the case does warm up but not to an uncomfortable level. BTW, think I used a 15 deg optic from Carlico.

I had one of the very first "3 small led in a mes fitting" types that you could screw into the secondary fitting in an oldham as a long lasting backup. Worked fine, but it was just a bit dimmer than a very dim thing on a dark and misty night.

I  found it cheaper to canibalise a cheap cree torch. and hard wire / solder to oldham head'

ten minutes work with a mounted point in a cordless drill, 2 wires to solder.
Zoom batt box or wotevver you prefer.
been reliable for three years so far.have moved on to better 'cheapo torch since. tho.

I use the screw in (XP-G?) leds that are claimed to be about 120lm and cost about ?12, as do several others in my club. They are by far and away the simplest solution and I've not had any reliability issues. They seem to last at least 10hrs in a duo with 2900mAh batteries.

Sure, there are more efficient LED's and drivers, but I doubt you'll be able to see much difference (given the logarithmic nature of light perception etc).
