How do you wear your long hair for caving?

I wear my long hair in a plait and put it down the inside of my undersuit. A friend this weekend said this never works for her - her hair comes out of the plait, gets stuck to the velcro of her suit, and so on. So, how do you wear your long hair that reliably keeps it out of the way? Thanks :)

    Bull Pot (Kingsdale) entrance rigging

I couldn't get my head around the rigging topo for the top of Bull Pot today. Does anyone have a photo of how they rig it? After some deliberation we started the rope round a small boulder immediately to the right of the Y-hang as you face uphill. It offered sufficient protection for...

Working at height on Salisbury Cathedral

I'm watching an old series in which Tony Robinson visits cathedrals (a good watch if you're into that kind of stuff, and there is a new series of a similar nature currently on TV). Episode 3, about half way through, features the men who change the lightbulbs at the top of the spire of Salisbury...

Sheffield to Guiseley or the Dales

Would anyone be able to transport a handful of books from Sheffield (Hunters Bar) to a club hut in the Dales or to somewhere near Guiseley? If Sheffield doesn't work, TSG is a possibility. Many thanks in advance.

    CRO historical incident reports

Does anyone else get really confused by these? Takes a few minutes to work out I'm reading an account of a 1934 rescue. Why do CRO post these?

    Why is Pippikin Pot rigged?

Does anyone know when it was first left rigged and why, and who replaces the ropes (if anyone)? Just curious :)

Free: plastic pint glasses; lever arch files

Can anyone make use of eleven plastic pint glasses from various events? Or a handful of lever arch files? Cheers

    Memories of student trips

The "Forgotten things" thread has got me remembering some student trips. I have a definite memory of descending or ascending wet pitches where you had to look down to breathe, but I can't think of where that would have been, apart from it would have been in the Dales. It's possible it only...

Gouffre du saut de la Pucelle

Has anyone done a trip down the Pucelle? If yes, please could you shed any light on the tackle requirements? The description in Spéléoguide du Lot lists many short ropes but rumour has it that it can be done with less than what is listed. Many thanks in advance :)

    Flatworms in Gingling

We had a really enjoyable club trip to Fool's Paradise and back yesterday. I've never been before; what a fabulous cave. Anyway, I was initially horrified to see numerous tiny white worms in the flat out crawl immediately before Fool's Paradise, where it is hard to avoid touching them. I...

    Disappointment Pot "First Pitch"

We're having a bit of a debate at home. Not For the Faint-Hearted has the first drop in Disappointment Pot (prior to the duck) as a climb. Northern Caves and CNCC both have it as a pitch, or at least a climb with a rope. I think it sounds like a Mike Cooperism (why use a rope if you can climb...

    Cycle touring: flats or SPDs?

As per the title really. I keep wondering about switching to SPDs. I've always ridden with flat pedals, for various reasons. My partner uses SPDs and the other people we ride with tend to use flats. I understand pedalling would be more efficient and perhaps I would go faster with SPDs, but...

Grim smell in West Kingsdale Master Cave

On a trip today we were heading for a wade through the canals that lead to the Rowten sumps. We stepped out of the stream at the Master Junction and turned right and immediately met a wall of the odour of death. I thought it might be sewage-based but my companion thought dead animal. We tried to...

    Sleeping bag silk? liner

This is a long shot. Did anyone else happen to buy a silk liner at Hidden Earth, ten or more years ago? I think a caver who had recently been to Vietnam or Thailand had either had them made there or had bought them, and was selling them for a good price. I've used ours quite a bit recently and...

    Audio archive

On a long train journey I have really been enjoying listening to the audio archives. Thank you to everyone who has put work into these, and to the library for hosting them.

    Club trips

I'm interested to know how other caving clubs organise club trips, if they have them, if they have "hut meets"/members-only weekends that are separate to social events, and if there is good attendance on club trips. Thanks in advance :)

Bull Pot Farm - power outage

Please don't come to the farm for the time being. Something got struck by lightning last night and we don't have power, therefore we don't have water or flushing toilets. I'll update once it's back up. The power people are working on it.

    Cow Pot limestone beds

Yesterday whilst shivering waiting for something just beneath the climb & awkward tube at the bottom of the Cow Pot shakehole, I noticed that there are two distinct beds of limestone at that location. The lower one is paler and more creamy coloured; the upper one is darker and more grey...

    Climbing wall rules

I've just had an embarrassing experience at a climbing wall where I was told my harness was too old and that I wasn't allowed to climb there using it. I think my harness is fine but perhaps I'm wrong. Has anyone else had the same, or heard of this? They don't check the age or condition of...

    Free things

Can I interest anyone in a Tunnocks hat, courtesy of the CUCC Austria expo some years ago, or a helmet lamp bracket?
