Is sewage still getting in to Slaughter Stream Cave?

The last trip we done there was awfully smelly, just after Zuree Aven :yucky:

It's mainly present (acutely) just after a big storm when the water company opens up its valves ! When there hasn't been a really big storm, with high levels of run off, then there is no fresh sewage present...
If you are thinking of a trip, ring one of the forest cavers, or drop Andy Clark a line, to find out current conditions...
It's interesting that they are allowed to do this (and we have tried to stop it) - after all it all enters the Wye after a couple of kilometres right into a very popular tourist (bathing) spot !!!

When storm water overwhelms the normal surface drainage system, and storage tanks can't cope, the excess is discharged into the rivers etc. Because it is stormwater that has overwhelmed the system, the sewage is highly diluted, get washed away at speed, and is of little danger to anyone. Normal biological processes will dispatch whatever harmful content there is. The alternative is to construct vastly bigger storage capacity for what is actually almost 100 percent rainwater. It's only when sewage contains little or no rainwater that sewage treatment is absolutely vital, as there is no dilution effect and discharging untreated sewage has very serious consequences.
