Bangor Cavers after some storage suggestions

Bangor Student Caving Club formed in January 2020. Despite being described by one member as a phoenix that keeps trying to die, the club is doing well and we're currently enjoying the best freshers season yet.

We have one issue that over the last nearly 4 years we've not been able to solve. Where do we keep the kit?!

Bangor is one of the few student clubs that are not linked with the student union. Despite multiple attempts the university do not want caver's as part of the SU. Meaning we can not use the uni's clubs storage.

The kit has moved around club members bedrooms which for the first couple of years was okish, less ideal after trips when kit is wet! Picture trying to dry a clubs worth of kit in a halls room! In the last year we've done a good job of growing our kit, drastically helped by some kind donations. Whilst this is wonderful and more of us can go caving at once. Our storage problem is really escalating!

Summer time presents us more issues with most students not having a room over summer, one year it went to Rostam's parents, another summer it was spread out amongst club members parents houses all over the country.

The kit is currently with some alumni and is taking over their house and making them grumpy.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions of how we can find storage for what is now quite a bit of kit with limited funds?

I presume you want to keep it in Bangor area - rather than base it in one of the main caving areas? If the latter we can have a think . . .

Ask the City where you are located if they have facilities for sports clubs.

For example we rent for 250€/year a storagespace + a club local, water and energy included.

I've no link with them but could be worth contacting Lancashire Climbing and Caving, they have their hut in Tanygrisiau, you could ask if they'll let you leave one of those lockable outdoor storage boxes in their garden or something. You can get a little lockable unit for about £100 (or cheaper if you found a used one) and try negotiate a reasonable ground rent charge with them. A bit off route if you were heading for a Dales trip, but it's probably on the way to the Welsh caving areas from you. I'm sure there are other huts around there that I don't know about too.

Nice work on keeping it up and running btw, great to see student clubs thriving 👍

Maybe speak to DMM and see if they can help in any way? At the very least they have dozens of local employees and other outdoor connections. Someone may be able to help.

You could try the Menai Boat Club at Menai Bridge, they have a little used unit at the Inboard end of St Georges Pier.
